Hi Neil,
I can't comment on the Garmin unit you're talking about as I'm not familiar with it (ie know of it - but haven't used one).
Diamond is right though, I recently bought a Magellan Meridian through eBay. Brand new, in original packaging - factory sealed etc for $280 landed to my front door using express insured shipping. :-)
I love the Meridian, and am very happy with my purchase.
If you are interested in more details, I'd be happy to fill you in - email me :-)

If that is just a basic Emap then it is $100 too high.
Try Johnny Appleseedwho do mail order all over Aus and have a good reputation.
You may also want to consider a power cable, data cable and mount.
GPSozin
Sydney, are best for cables.
For mounts you can use the Garmin mount or, if your dash is the right shape, just a piece of velcro.
The Australian basemap is pretty basic with only a reasonable coastline and main highways.
You may wish to consider the Mapsource Metroguide mapping CD and a data card.

Magellan have the best maps in respect of amount of detail/info, however, Garmin have the best graphics.
