There has been a few questions about 80 series cruisers lately (including myself) so thought I would post this to help anybody that is looking at one. It was given to me by another gentleman on here but I not sure if it was posted before so apologize if I have repeated it......WHG

I've sold my 1990 80 series GXL now so can't check those spots but a couple of years ago I did find some concerning surface rust under the grill immediately in front of the bottom of the front windscreen.

Leaves & dust got in out-of-sight and had composted there so it was continuously damp.
Grill is easily removed (from memory wipers off then a couple of phillips head screws).

Good Luck

Peter

Thanks for bring that to our attention. After owning 6 different 60series I plan to buy an 80series later this year. It is very good to be forewarned where to look for rust - especially if its not known as a common problem in a model.
Cheers,
GPM

I should also mention that when you first get onto the link, just under where the person has described the problem, there is words saying, ""show/hide show, you need to click on show then it will show the diagrams of exactly the problem. Brilliant description and pics of the problem area, Thankyou to the person on "offroad80's"". The cruiser I looked at yesterday in Melbourne (I live in Sydney) when I pulled the two bungs they must have been full, the bloke nearly died in the a r s e when he saw the amount of water come out. I didnt purchase it anyway too many other isssues....WHG

G-day WHG, I have a `93 80s GXL, when I bought it new it was rust proofed by Endrust as a separate deal, luckily I was able to be there when he did the job, the area you mention was one spot he paid particular attention to,hence,no rust there, but I have kept an eye on it, also the air scuttlle and around the A pillar gutters need watching as well as they fill with small leaves. The only spot of rust I had was on the top tailgate, just above the wiper,I had it fixed and it never reappeared. Regards,Keith C

Hi guys, i had a 1995 gxl 80 series.. well 2 of them the first one 1990 was a dream nothing eva went wrong with it , the 2nd one well a lemon and nearly sent me broke turbo, heads 3 diffs front, brakes then gearbox.. then at 137580klm the motor blew, mind you i serviced this at 5000 klm every time. but i never found any rust in either car. but my brother owns a standard 80 the rear side windows fixed, are rusting out around the windows , also around the roof gutters. I just ordered my new 70 series v8 workmate 4 door troopy, i asked to have it endrusted. they have a new thing that bolts into the engine bay and sends pos and neg charges through the whole car.Toyota told me it comes with 10 year warranty and costs 990 dollars fitted. i hope when i pick this car up its going to give me a lot of fun and pleasure. if any one has had problems with this model troopie i would like to hear about it thanks guys cheers Ron.
ps; its a 2009 troopie too...

my gxl had sound proof mats in engine bay and i found rust between firewall and inner guard. could only see it if you looked from under and up behind inner guard. it was rust proofed but i think it was salt water being trapped in matting. it did not live on beach and was always washed after beach trip. 80 series are nearly 20 yrs young now amazing heh

Thank you very much for posting that link, I checked mine this morning, and it was dry thank goodness. I've left the bung out and sprayed some anti rust up through the hole. Like it says that area is completely hidden and you would not know you had a problem until it was too late.
Thanks Jon
