We are in Port Douglas after doing the Daintree. We have 2 weeks before we have to pick someone up in Cairns and are looking for somewhere to go inland to get away from the rain. Can anyone recommend anywhere that they have been and loved?

G'day

2 weeks - plenty of time to see many things.
For me I would head west to Lawn Hill Gorge with a decent stop at Mt Surprise to see all the attractions in the area (Lava tubes, Cobbold Gorge, etc.). Of course this depends on what vehicle you have and what the road conditions into Lawn Hill are like.

Lawn Hill is my tip though - awesome spot along with the close by Riversleigh fossil fields.

I have no doubt you will get many top tips on this site.

Happy travels
Evan

To find out road conditions from Gregory Downs to Lawn Hill, phone Adels Grove camp ground.

No rain at Old Maytown. There is a good easy 4x4 track 2.5k North of the Mareeba Cooktown Boundary on the Mulligan Highway that will take you to a nice camp spot on the Palmer river for a few dry days. From there you can take a more adventurous track to look at the historical Maytown site if you are into that type of thing. The 71k from the highway to Palmer river will take around 3hrs.

Other than that this time of year you only have to get off the coast behind the Tablelands and all is dry! Cheers Tony

Hi Pauline,
Try having a look around Chillagoe - there's plenty there to see. Also O'Briens Creek out of Mt Surprise is worth a visit - the Gem Shop in Mt Suprise hires out fossicking gear and licences c/w mudmaps of the area and you can camp at Elizabeth Creek Campground right on the edge of the Gemfields. Google them for a phone number. There is also Undara in that neighbourhood.
Emu Creek Station west of Dimbulah is another spot inland and should be away from the rain or most of it anyway. There is also Mt Mulligan in that area which is worth a drive in at least. Quite a bit of historical value in that area.Tyrconnell down the same road has some camping sites I think. I'm unsure about Mt Mulligan itself for camping at the moment.
These are all spots we have visited in the past and thoroughly enjoyed.

Ask around as there are plenty more spots I'm sure people will share with you.

Regards

Thanks guys, very helpful, have read up around the area but recommendations are the best way. Have 4WD with off road campertrailer so we should be o.k. with all of the places. Will be heading off tomorrow. Start of 6 mth trip up around top end to Perth so will be sure to ask for further recommendations along the way.
