Evening All,
Just been for a walk around our local Caravan park to have a sticky at other peoples rigs and to get ideas for our own big trip.(approx 3 months away).I noticed a lot of people there have a fluro light that throws a soft yellow colour.i have heard rumours that they discourage visits from insects and the like.
Can anyone confirm or scrap these rumours ? Or what other real solutions are out there to keepm our little visitors at bay.
The minister for finance (the wife) and daughter are allergic to mozzies so any info would be great.
We know of the standard ones but are after the special jobs.
Cheers

Hi just going
The bugs are not attracted to the yellow light like a normal white
bright light, but the mossies are attracted by the CO2 that you produce nothing to do with light.
There is a 12/240volt bug light, it emits titanium dioxide that attracts the biting insects and the ultraviolet light kills them ( a little fan keeps them in the light till they die no zapping etc. it will run for several days on a car battery 17 comes to mind but would have to
check (may be 7) you lave it running all day, there is also a 240volt one that does a bigger area it costs 2 cents a day to run.

The yellow colour not attracting insects is no rumour, it is fact.
There are two solutions I have proven and use.
The first is a 12 volt LED light. Although not quite as
bright as the 12 volt Versalite, the LED's do not attract insects.
I have one which I have used around the cooking area of the Camper annex which worked very
well, but one bank of 3 LED's have failed and I am unable to fix. Still working though and the light still emits a reasonable amount of lumens.
I also have a 12 volt Piranha fluro which is the same as the Versalite fluro. An accessory you can buy for the Piranha (and I assume would fit the Versalite) is a yellow filter which is inserted inside the housing. (Available for $6 from TJM who are Piranha distributors)
Yellow light does not attract insects although you do lose a bit of brightness compared to the original "white" light.
I now use this for the food preparation end of the Camper annex and have another 12 volt (Evakool Torpedo) fluro light for the other end which provides a wider spread of "white" light. I don't care if this attracts insects as we don't sit under it.
Both the Piranha/Versalite fluro (1A) and the Torpedo fluro (0.5 A) are low current draw devices and as I use a battery pack to run the fridge anyway, the extra draw is negligible.
I also have a battery operated Coleman lantern which is used inside the tent area next to the bed. This is also a 12 volt compact fluro, using 8 'D' cell batteries which last ages, as we only use the lantern on infrequent occasions whilst inside the camper.
I find 12 volt lighting to be much more practical and hassle free than the gas lantern I used to use.

Insects are attracted by ultra violet light, to remove the UV from your
camp light you can put a special yellow filter over the lamp (not just any old yellow material).

A good broad spot light mounted high and away from
camp attracts the insects away from your
camp but gives you the required light.

On our last trip, I went into the hardware store in
Longreach and bought a spray can of Dulux Carnival Yellow paint.
I took the lends covers off the various lights on the camper and sprayed the outside of each.
By the evening, was sitting in the yellow glow and much less bugs around us.
If I need a bit more light, and the bugs and not around munch, I remove the light lend cover and get a better amount of light to read by.
