Walker's Crossing

We have changed our plains due to the finacial side of things and instead of heading to the red centre for 3 weeks, we are going to do Birdsville and Innamicka in a 2 week trip, but my only problem is doing the Walker's crossing track,i've done it twice before with mates but never on our own, just remember seeing a few signs to Innamicka thinking at the time, jeez not that many signs to point you in the right direction,so many tracks to follow you could get lost very easy,we are going in the july school holidays so here's hoping there will be some one to follow.cheer's GREENDOG

Greendog. I found the same mate! But in the end what signs were there got us from Innamincka to Birdsville. I was a bit worried I was on the right track a few times but the signs were right. Cheers Tony

Was going to do the same trip this year but have put things off for the same reason, finances.
Hadn't thought of the school holidays connection but sounds like a good idea.
There's always something to learn on theses sites

What GPS are you using?

If you have Garmin/mapsource, then

Tracks4Australia

has this track well covered..

I purchasesd the vers1.2 CD off ebay some time back, I don't know how the free version compares with this, but from my observation, there are not too many tracks which are not shown on this mapset..

First time we went through there (solo vehicle, B'ville to I'Mincka), we had no GPS, and found ourselves on the wrong track a coupla times, but we made it OK;-))

Guess that rules out the T4A then;-))

Is this area not covered on the Hema?

GPS ??

Who needs one of those. We did it on our own ...no GPS, not even a good map... just basic directions from the guy at the Inamincka general store.

Must admit there were a few moments we looked out the windscreen wondering well the hell the track dissapeared to.

Greendog,
I spent a fair bit of time placing waypoints on the GPS route down through Walkers Crossing, it worked for the missus and I.

Some signs were there and some not.

Homework helps a lot, as if you are travelling with others for the first time who says they are right.

You had better check if the track will be open with the locals too, as there has been some rain up in that district.

Cheers

Steve

Blue One - We did this track at the last moment - no research and no GPS. We found signs when needed. Just stuck to the main track until we found the next sign. It all fell into place. There is some big distances between signs. But it all works out. Cheers Tony

Well done Tony,
You have done the track without any aids, maps etc.

We didn't see enough signs to get to Innaminka hence the note.

It is interesting to note that the main PAR looks like a secondary track compared to the mining roads which you are not allowed to drive on.

Evening Greendog, did the trip a week ago from moomba to birdsville track, what a s---fight, we did it 9 years ago no problems, so many gas roads now nearly makes it impossible, at one stage we did ask a worker as we were on a road that did not exist on tracks 1.2 and we where ignored (rudebastard) we eventually found our way. Basically a highway (with bmany routes)till the crossing and then returns to as i remembered it a good track. Coming from Birdsville would be easier.
Cheers and have fun,
Graeme

Greendog, we just travelled this road on April 21. We went from Innaminka to Birdsville though. A bit of a maze through the gas fields.
Coming the way you want you should follow the green signs with yellow arrows on them. They look like they have been put up for travellers such as a tag a long or something. Mostly you need either a sign saying Innaminka or the green one with yellow arrow.

Hope this helps.
