Hi All,did anyone experienced chassis cracks in this vehicles,I have heard rumors of this being a common ocurrence and maybe some one can comment .

Hi Joseph
I run a Tour company in
Kakadu, I run Oka's, most other companies are running Canters, My opposition run a 5 year old canter they bought new, They have had the Chassis fixed 4 out of the 5 years, other companies have had the same problem.
However the Isuzu have a bigger and stronger Chassis, some tour companies are heading down this road.

Hi Joe,
Yeah we use them for our work in the mining industry and have no stop issues with chassis cracking.
Ours spend their entire life in low range and off road but you wouldn't expect the chassis' to be cracking after only 2 years.
We're now looking at building our own trucks with a much stronger chassis.

Does anyone know where the chassis cracks are located? (apart from "in the chassis" :-))
We are looking at purchasing some secondhand Canter 4x4's so any information of where to check would be greatly appreciated.

Andrew,for what I have been told their are happening mainly towards the front area close to the goosneck and around front spring hangers.

Joe, why would you want to swap an OKA for a Canter?
Which OKA VIN is it?
I have heard of cracks in OKA chassis around the front LH area where the tie rod 'cut -out' is, but I have not actually met anyone with the problem.
The new NT OKA has gone up in wall section by 1mm for the chassis (and the GVM is up too), but I'd stick with an older one without all the electronics. It is all re-buildable.

Hi Peter,the Canter was for a different project and with the gov investment allowance it look half inviting,I was made aware of the problems by a couple of people,one being a mechanic for a tour bus operator.
I will not swap the OKA for a Canter or a Isuzu(which will be my second preference after the OKA).The area over the LHS on the OKA's been long gone with the wrap around gusset that they design.
Mine is 083 with a few changes.

The chassis on any truck will brake if it is not loaded correctly. The chassis has to be able to flex to survive. If a very rigid box is firmly attached to a chassis it will prevent it flexing except forward of the box. If you study a properly designed vehicle set up you will notice the body is clamped on with allowance for the body and chassis to flex together. If a chassis does brake, just welding it up without addressing the original problem will cause it to break again especially if the chassis is made even stiffer, There are thousands of 4x4 Canters set up as fire trucks, driven over tracks always fully loaded and I have not seen one with a broken chassis. Eric thanks for your reply,you're making a fair comment as in regards to the chassis flex,the problem is that it has been quite a few cases including overseas vehicles with bodies mounted on a 3 and 4 point frames (similar to the type that Unicat uses for the Unimogs,Volvo's and MAN's )and still experience cracks,Im not degrading the vehicle in any way Im just looking for something that will suit my needs without added headhaches.
