Are there any travellers out there who have recently travelled the
Savannah Way or towed a caravan across there. I would love to hear if you have. Cheers Peter & Gwen

2007 gwezza, so not so recent, but there is a slide show here with a few pics of the section along the Gulf.
(The
Savannah Way runs all the way from
Cairns to
Broome).
Slide show
Should not be too much drama with a 'dirt road' van, but a 'black top' van might suffer a bit, unless you take it very quietly.
The
Calvert River Crossing is a bit 'boney', the rest is no drama if it is dry.
Chers,
Peter

Getting Old :-). Actually thinking further, it was in
Atherton I saw it parked, maybe Friday. Yes it has been raining 10 days now, usually it stays on the coast and southern Tablelands this time of year. It has been a bit unusual this year and the Cape has got a fair bit of continuing rain. You should be able to start your trip to the cape though :-). It will dry up as you head north with a bit of luck. Cheers Tony

Hi there Peter and Gwen,
Last May we did the
Savannah way from
Burketown to
Borroloola in our single axel Jayco caravan. Before we left we had it raised flipped the axel I'm told. it took us 2 days, the road was quite corrigated in parts but as my husband says you can go most
places if you drive to conditions. But all in all a really good trip. If your looking for somewhere to stay at Boroloola, your best bet is to go out to King Ash Bay and stay at Batton Point it is
free camping in a lovely spot we had a terrific time there.
That was our experience and we loved it.

Hi Peter,
We are on the
Savannah Way as we speak.
Well actually we've made it to
Karumba coming from the east coast. We are travelling in a dual axle caravan and so far haven't had any problems. Just trying to find out something about the road conditions from
Burketown to Boroloola as we speak. Getting conflicting reports about whether we can get our van through or not. Some sites are saying that there is still water over the road, but they haven't been updated for some time. This is our first trip in our van and haven't encountered any real problems. I think the next section will be our
test.

Hi Guys,
we ended up having to detour south at
Burketown. Apparently they haven't looked at any of the roads from
Burketown to Boroloola yet. We heard from someone within the Burke Shire that they had to pull out a couple of offroad vans who had got stuck in some bad washouts on the road (and now had some bad damage to the back end of their van) - so we went to
Lawn Hill NP which was
well worth it. Travelled on the Wills Development Rd (4WD track to
Camooweal via
Riversleigh). Van coped OK all though we have some damage to the front of our van from all the rocks on the road.

We travelled
Savannah Way (
Broome-
Kakadu-
Cairns) last July/August with a camper trailer and had no problem other than a broken/fatigued spring on the trailer. Got stuck in Boroloola for three 3 nights rather than one.
Some very harsh dips just east of Boroloola and the road is corrugated but nothing impassable at the time. Take the whole part at an easy pace with an off-road van and you should be fine. Lots of corrugations!!
Watch for big bulldust holes, close to but, west of
Doomadgee
I found King Ash Bay to be unsuitable for camping as it was very dry and dusty. We stayed at the park in town which is grassed.
You can drive up to the coast in a short time from Boroloola also.
Some beautiful country around
Cape Crawford. Road House at
Cape Crawford had the loudest generator I have ever heard!!
