At BP Longreach, friend of mine took his gas bottle to get refilled ,was'nt to happy to pay $39.50, however when he lifted the bottle up it was'nt the weight he expected, he declared that the bottle was'nt full and insisted it be connected back up to the filler, yes it tooks lots more gas, just goes to show how easy you can be ripped off.Just thought travellers should be aware when getting gas bottles refilled. He later found out he could have refilled at another location for $25.00.

I thought that the bottles had to be filled by weight?? and then you get charged the per kg rate??

Cheers Kev

Kev,

Don't think that is the case any more mate.
Most refilling locations don't even have weighing scales and therefore can't do partial refills. They just open up the valve and "fill" to overflowing. At least, that's what they should be doing. Then charge you the going rate for that sized cylinder.

I get mine filled at our local BBQ's Galore store. Cost is $29.50 for a 9 kg bottle from memory and every fifth refill is free. That keeps me going back:-)

I am somewhat vague to the price because my last refill was the freeby.

Guys
Filled a 9k bottle at the local Mitre 5 (only have half of what you want) last week cost $37.80, its slightly less if you swap and go.

Fwwwaaahhh - you guys are getting ripped off -- last time i filled up my bottles ( take 4 down at a time ) i was charged about $15 each ( or $17) and that's the standard rate for 1 bottle (9kg)

also when you buy your bottles , Have a look at the size ( visual ) the 4 gas bottles i have are all 9 kg and all are different sizes --- bunnings one was the smallest ( same as the swap and go) largest one was from Bigw - AS MOST of the gas refill places fill by visually seeing the overflow - the larger bottle ( although 9 kg rated ) should hold maybe 1 or 2 litres more -- something to think about when buying your next bottle

Last year we were in North Queensland and needed to have a 4.5 Kg gas cylinder filled. We were at Mission Beach and found a gas outlet behind the Tradelink shop.

The cylinder was filled FULL and was weighed [ on a filling station that was new to me.] Only cost approx $13.

The same size cylinder at Atherton cost me over $20 and was not full.

There's no guarantee that a swap'n'go will give you a full bottle either.

I have two 9 kg bottles and a 4.5 kg bottle, all with float gauges attached.

It gives me an easy visual indication as to how much gas is left.

Maybe so, but at the "swap an go" you get rid of some-one else's OLD & DAMAGED gas bottle you found dumped with the other junk on the 'verge' on clean-up day, it cost you nothing, and you get in return an as-new, clean gas bottle, it's also filled with gas, now that's a bonus :-))

In the South west Sydney, you can still refill for around $18. At leppington BP i think, refill is $11.. thats very low.. Michael

Hi
I don't think any fill by weight yese days

Filling by gas venting is ok if they let a bit of liquid flow until it is a steady stream
Problem is many turn off at first sign of liquid.
If you get it filled @ a gas distributor most fill by metered quanity.
Swap & go I believe only 8kgs, definately not 9.
In Qld I have found BCF to be best.

Hi Roy,

We took a faulty one (swapped somewhere in SW WA for our new one) which was leaking around the screw thread connection to a swap and go place a few weeks ago and the young bloke tried to give us another similar ancient one which we declined. Not sure what it cost but it was around $32.

The one we dropped back must have been close to empty as we only found out where the gas smell was coming from after using it for around a week and running our 184 litre fridge on gas as well as other appliances and hot water but he put it back in with the 'full' ones even though he was told about it.

Think we have learned a lesson to be a bit wary about the condition of the one we are offered now, and also how heavy it is.

Cheers

I was quoted about $33 at West Lakes Gas here in Newcastle a few days ago for a swap & go 9 Kg cylinder, so went around the corner to our local camping supply place who do refills for $22

We pay just over $100 for a 45KG cylinder for the home heating and cook top. Going to make up a adapter to fill my small bottles from that. So a 9kg will cost about $20 to refill.

Hi Louie:
Be interested in how you do that once you get it done. I also have gas for our cooktop at home and would like to refill my bottles from that. Handy if the bbq runs out as well.
Cheers

Jack, you just make up a hose sufficiently long enough and join the two together. The 45kg cylinder needs to be tipped upside down as it has no filling spike (I understand the ones at the servo's have this), open the vent valve on the cylinder to be filled (the fillee), and open the valve on the filler. Gas will come out of the vent valve when full. Simply close this valve with a screwdriver and she's done.

Louie,

Where do you get bottles (45 kg.) for a 100 bucks?

We pay $128.50 here in LSE. SA. and have to pickem up in town ourselves.

If you know what your doing it is fine (I used to work in a harware store many years ago and filled lots of small bbq bottles). I think you will find that the 45KG bottles ( and the biggers ones again) used to refill small bottle are different to the normal 45KG bottle. They usually have a spear that goes to the bottom of the bottle so your getting the liquid gas out, otherwise all you get is gaseous gas.

The other option is to turn the bottel up side down and that can be quite dangerous as well.

Make sure you dont end up sending yourself into orbit.

Regards Duncan

Nick, we buy our gas from Kleenheat. Purchase over the phone with credit card and it costs $108. That includes delivery and connecting the bottle up for you as well.

I never use Swap and go as I don't think they fill them and I still think it is expensive.

I joined the BCF club (Boating camping & Fishing) and it cost me $19 to fill a 9kg bottle...and they are all over AUS.

Here in the Isa the local Mitre 2.5 25% of what you need, want $37.80 for a 9kg bottle refill.

The swap and go is almost $39. It is getting harder here in town to get refills, many places are getting rid of the big bottles and moving to the swap and go because it is more convenient for them, and they make almost the same $$.

I would never use swap and go as both of my bottles are brand new, and I'm not handing them over for some bleep ty 10yo bottle someone else swapped for a good one.

When I read what some of you pay for a 9Kg refill, I think I need to start filling bottles out here for a living, because if your merchants can fill them at those prices and profit from it, I could kill it out here by undercutting the locals by $5 a refill.

Metro servos on the Central Coast NSW have 9kg refills for between $17.99 and $22. At Easter, the prices were up to $22 for the Sydney invasion but down again to $17.99 afterwards. Haven't noticed recently but I don't think they'd be more than $20. One at Gosford and one at Ourimbah. I'm sure there'd be others.
