Are there any good squid or fishing spots in Sandy Bay Tasmania?

Well , the wife and I left sunny Mt Isa last Saturday and are now freezing our butts in Hobart.

Went to Mt Wellington on Sunday and it was very foggy and cold. In fact what I thought were flowers on all the bushes were actually icicles up to 25 mm long.

We had a look around for about ten minutes, in the fog, and then went back down the mountain.

Now back to the topic. We are right next to the water at Long Beachat Sandy Bay and I'm wondering where to fish and what I'll be fishing for.

I'm familiar with fishing at St Helens, but have never dropped a line down this way.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You "might" get some Australian Salmon or small flathead but I wouldn't be eating it out of there. What is your rough itinerary and I will give you a few tips but I don't fish the river anymore. There are good Bream to be had under the Bowen Bridge near Glenorchy but with the Zinc factory right next to there, again they are not worth eating.

Got a couple of 25kg tuna yesterday off Pirates Bay towards Port Arthur (boat required), they are still running ok - if you can keep them out of the seals thieving jaws.

If you find your way down to Kettering, you'll get some squid off the jetty if they're about.
If you can get out on the water anywhere in the channel area you'll get a feed of flatties. Decent size are a bit scarce at present, ( according to the Father in law)

What do you mean freezing in Hobart.......it's not cold yet!!!!! :)

Oh, Number one

I wish I was, but I had to change the thongs for shoes, otherwise they would not let me in the casino. LOL

And by the way I did not see you at the top of Mt Wellington last sunday! Hmmm.

Hi Boo, I have never yet been to Tassie but this site may give you a lead to any squid available in your area. Australian Squid Forum

Good luck with it, I went out from Busselton WA yesterday & got 6 nice ones in an hour drifting.

Calamari...mmmmmmm

Neil.

Hi Boo Boo

We are currently in Tassie have been now for 5weeks - yep its getting cool, we were in Hobart last week - we are now at Somerset as we are catching the spirit back next week and we have relatives here. We tried fishing at St Helens a couple ago with no luck - they say "Little beach" in the Bay of Fires is the way to go (met up with a local guy he told us!!).

Enjoy this beautiful place - we have LOVED Tassie - anyone doing a lap of the paddock should visit!!! if it wasn't so cool and we weren't Qld'rs and loved the sun we would live here in a heartbeat.

Cheers

Matt and Caz

We will be up around the NW of Tassie over the long weekend.

We have been to St Helens a few times and except for last January have always caught squid of the new Rotary Club Jetty near the boatyard.

Yep you are right. Tassie is a top place, thats why we have been here 4 times since last July.

l agree with kettering if you're after Squid, you can hire a boat there to get out in the channel, which is better than the jetty, we did that a couple of weeks ago but only got a few flatties,
you can also get squid from both Margate and Woodbridge jetties, which are both near Kettering,
if you're happy not to eat them you can catch flathead from the two small jetties at the Domain right in Hobart plus the other piers too,

Hobart cold in winter?? lol lol

your comment reminds me of a bloke yakking on his phone at Salamanca a couple of weeks ago that it was freezing ( it had snowed on Mt Wellington the night before ) but he was eating an ice cream at the time,

what a dill
