Hi Stoney,
I recall it's about 300km shorter on the inland route. Both inland and coast roads are pretty good and on a par with each other.
Inland road is pretty boring, tho the towns of New Norcia, Mt Magnet, Cue, Meekatharra and Newman are interesting. You could also detour into Karajini NP on the way between Newman and Hedland.
cheers,
Gerry

Only problem with the inland route is the number of road trains.

Yeh, technically correct. My experience last year was almost convoys of heavy equipment being carted north to mines. I suspect that the economic downturn might have severely curtailed their activity if one can believe the news.

If going to Derby and don't want to go to Port Hedland, a more direct route is via Marble Bar and either the Goldsworthy or the Boreline Roads to the Highway.

Check out the kms of the different routes on Goseeaustralia.com.au

I agree Motherhen.

A much more interesting drive, 1-200km shorter and quicker if roads are good. You can't go past skull springs, running waters and Carawine gorge.

Cheers Matt.

Have been on both roads many times you can't beat a visit to karijini NP have just returned last week however in saying that on the coast road a small detour to coral bay and exmouth is hard to beat (a must to book at coral bay no free camping) so maybe go on one road and return on the other either way it's a great trip !!!!!
