I lived in Carnarvon for a while and did the same trip numerous times. Only recently did I do the inland hwy.

If you're talking about going via Meeka...then you add about 400k's to the over all trip. Further obviously if you go higher then back across.

I really enjoyed the inland drive but saying that, it was perfect weather, clear and no wind. Wind is often something you have put up with on the coastal run.

Personally, I'd say if you have the time, go the inland way just to see for your yourself. At least you get to see something different and you can check out Burrungurah(Mt Augustus) and Cobra Station along the way. Both decent places for an overnight stop. (gravel Roads though between Meeka and Carnarvon)

The inland road has less hills but is a steady contant uphill slope, according to the GPS.

Hi Gavan,

If you do decide to go via the inland route, it is worth taking the extra drive north from Gascoyne Junction to visit the Kennedy Ranges N Pk - lovely little camp ground with a caretaker couple, and great walks. We stayed there recently for a few days and loved it. Towed our van in without any worries.

Rocky Pool around 55 kms east of Carnarvon is a good overnight (or lunch) place too - lots of space to bush camp along the river, lots of birds and scenic little spot.

All but 30 kms of the road from Carnarvon to Gascoyne Junction is sealed but the road to the N Pk from Gascoyne Junction is dirt. May be a problem is it rains so watch the weather.

I might see how the wind is looking when we go and decide from there.

Thanks for the Holiday destinations along the way.
