I am planning a trip south on the
Connie Sue Hwy next year and am tossing up the most interesting route across from the Stuart Hwy.
I would like to go across on the
Mulga Park Rd but am not sure yet about access to
Warburton Via Blackstone. The alternate route I would like to take is to head north to Giles and possibly taking in The Old Gunbarrel Hwy but need to find if access is permitted south of
Jackie Junction otherwise will head straight down the GCR
I wondered if anyone has travelled these tacks recently and what you thought also any thoughts regarding alternate
routes across would be appreciated.
Regards
Tony

Hi Tony
Not unless you know someone that lives out on the APY Lands, will have no way in the world of getting a Permit to travel past Mulga
Park homestead out to Kalka. When we travelled that way, I know an Aboriginal Elder that lives at Umuwa and his homelands at Amata. Because of this friendship, our permits were classed as a family visit. From Wingellina to
Warburton is also out of bounds. We are out that way in a few weeks time, but also travelling to some very out of the way
places, eg
Warburton to
Laverton by my long way will be just over 1300 kilometres.
The Abandoned section of the Old Gunbarrel is a great road to travel, with a few restrictions, a minimum of two vehicles and a maximum of only 5 vehicles, with Sat Phone or
HF Radio a requirement as
well.
To start the Connie Sue, you will have to get to
Warburton via the only way that a permit will allow, via
Yulara, Docker River, Warakurna, then down to
Warburton.
Best of luck with your planning, there are a few members on this site that are a real wealth of knowledge, that are willing to share information, if you ask the correct questions.
All the best with your planning
Cheers
Stephen

Hi Stephen
Thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear access is not possible west of Mulga
park without local contacts. From what I have read there is some spectacular country through there.

Tony

Hi Tony
Do not be dissapointed. There is still good spectacular country out to and past Docker River. I was contacted recently by the DIA for a survey on their permit system. That was one of the issues that I asked, as I know there are a few people on this
forum that have travelled out past Blackstone. When I applied by internet and over the phone, I mentioned, why can some white people get permission and others denied. My only response is that it is a closed aboriginal road and if caught, be prepared for very big fines.
I will give a run down of my trip when we return.
Cheers
Stephen
