After doing an extensive trip from Canberra to Kimberley (4K alone up there) and back we are looking at upgrading the suspension of our 100 series LC. Mainly to assist with the stability and extra weight we were carrying. Not a single problem for all the trip. Sorry - had to replace a tail light globe. No trailer or anything on the roof expected. No doubt the total weight (approx 3.5T) will be the same or close to it on other trips.

We have read about several brands but very little on Bilstein. Our son has them on his rally car but those particular ones apart from being way outside our price range are not suitable for the gravel/dirt/dust and sand etc cruising that we want to do.

Can anyone give advice or opinion of the Bilstein shocks please?

I run them on my current HZJ105 and I know others that use them on Prado's and HDJ100's with King or Ridepro springs. They are all very happy with and find the performance of Bilstein's far superior to the cheaper dampers available on the Australia market (Most of which are made by the same manufacturer).

There is a reason that prestige car makers and motor sport participants use them ...

IMHO they are one of the best commonly available dampers available. A similar quality product are Koni dampers.

Pretty much a "get what you pay for" issue.

I hope they are cheaper than our sons though. He paid K$ for each corner! Nice to have money hey!!!

Thanks

Had them fitted to our Prado before setting off in May with caravan in tow to do half a lap, including the GCR. We are impressed with their performance but jeeeez, they were expensive compared with alternatives.

Expensive only if they don't do what you bought them for or they fail in 4-5 years. Thats a relative term IMO , you get what you pay for.

Whether it's a relative term or not, I said they were expensive compared with alternatives; and they were.

I think Bilstein are dearer than their competitors rather than expensive as expensive tends to insinuate a lack of value or priced too high yet Abraxxas still bought them so he obviously believed them to be worthwhile. I have Bilstein shocks fitted to 2 vehicles I drive and I think they have been some of the best investments I have ever made so I believe they are cheap for what they achieve. IMO.

Did someone say Bilstein was expensive? You gotta be kidding, please try and understand Bilstein's market and their manaufacturing process and you'll soon realise they are actually cheap.

Most conventional shocks are made with shock bodies cut from a piece of steel tubing, stamped internal parts and compromised tolerances.

In contrast, Bilstein's shock bodies are precision formed through a unique seamless extrusion process. This provides superior strength along with high finish tolerances that are usually associated with surgical instruments. The finished body is then mated with a solid, induction hardened steel chrome plated and polished shaft, machined valving components and highest quality seals. Combined with extreme attention to detail, Bilstein provides you with the closest thing to a hand built shock available today.

Conventional shocks slowly lose efficiency and eventually fail over a period of time causing excessive tire and suspension wear. Bilstein Shocks continue to deliver optimum performance for life.

Of all your suspension components, nothing works harder than your shock absorbers, making it critical you pick the right ones for your vehicle. Bilstein Gas Pressure Shock Absorbers are the least expensive, fastest way to dramatically improve the ride, handling and control of your vehicle. Plus, with Bilstein's lifetime warranty, you may never have to purchase shock absorbers again.

Hi Abraxxas.I have an 05 Prado and find the ride with the standard shocks very firm, especially at lower speeds (up to 60kmh) Do the Bilstiens soften it at all. Thanks,Bob.

Hi Bob. I have an 06 diesel Prado. Since fitting the Bilsteins my wife is convinced the ride is generally smoother on all surfaces. Over the last 200 kilometres of the Laseter H'way from Docker River to Yulara where the road was in poor condition, I thought the car handled better. Having said that, we weren't scorching along either. road conditions determined our speed which at times was down to 10kph.

Hi vk1dx
After fitting Bilstein's to TONI I am very pleased with the ride and performance.

We did a trip through outback NSW and Vic since fitting them and with wildly different surfaces and terrains I can say with confidence that the car is BETTER than new. There seems to be little need for the "sweet speed" on corrugations and potholes etc as the Bilstein's soaked it all up with ease.

The Patrol was easy to steer and handle on all road surfaces , and the Bilstein's did not once fade under the strees and strain, in fact they sould and did just get better as they were worked harder.

In the distant past I was involved with Rally cars and we used Bilstein's exclusivly for thos very reasons.

You will never regret putting them on.

Just a word of caution the LC "might" need to have some protection on the tubes from fliying stones ect. as the position on the tojo rear axle is a bit prone to damage to the Bilstein's mono tube design.
If you are in Sydney talk to Total Care 4WD Jason is a good man to talk to re your 4By.
Cheers Colin.

Excellent. Thanks Colin.

We are in the ACT. There are excellent connections here as well. I may give Richie at Hume Off Road a call also.

Hi vk1dx, I ran Bilstein's and Ridepro springs on my 100IFS and the ride and handling was far superior to the "Old Man Emu" package they replaced, you do get what you pay for.
If you what a little more lift as I did there is a premium spec longer travel Bilstein available from Autocraft in Geelong that was developed for the 100IFS.

regards David
