Hello, I have just bought a Garmin 760 and although the street mapping is fine, I am trying to find a good compatible offroad one..

I have topo maps on paper( Watagans mainly ) and after downloading Shonky maps, found that almost none of the tracks are marked on it..

I know the Garmin Oztopo maps are there to buy, but are they as good as the old paper naps for detail ??

Will anything else run on the Garmin ??

Also, as I'm a complete failure with computers, downloading things is a mammoth task as well !!!!!

before you buy anything else have a look at this site

http://www.gpsaustralia.net/

shonky are pretty good, you need to zoom in to see most detail

I zoomed in as far as it would go and no more detail appeared that wasn't there at say 750M elevation ??

The already installed city navigator shows heaps more offroad tracks than Shonky ..

CN is probably better in this area as it's still really suburbia. Shonky comes into it's own when you're in the bush. I doubt that Garmin Topo will be any better in this area than CN but you do get 3D as a bonus.

Tracks4Australia also have a lot of tracks that shonky don't and "vise versa". I find the OzToppo pretty good, but I am not familiar with the area and tracks you need so can't comment on accuracy there.

I looked at Garmin Topo only last night at Johny Appleseed and looked at few areas in the bush in NE Vic I know of 4wd tracks and they were there. Also looked to see if Bore Track near Cameron Corner was there and it was. seems very good value at $199 and no downloading or mucking about. They alos have a marine version (marine maps) if you want to use in your boat.

I rang them up and although the topo maps are 1:100K compared to the topo maps I have at 1:25,000, he couldn't say how detailed they were as he couldn't compare....so I will try and get down to their Sydney store one day and have a look before I fork out money for something that the city navigator may do as good a job ??

I believe the best on the market at the moment is the Garmin Topo map, they've done well...
Visually its appealing and well ahead of the rest and also has auto-rerouting on bush tracks, you can add new tracks easily enough too..You'll be happy with it.

I found there are tracks missing in Garmin Topo Aus v2 where Oztopov2.1 have them and same goes the other way around. In Adelaide Garmin topo aus have left a few streets out and yet they are on the CN2009NT maps

Garmin Topo has got some good detail of the surrounding just like Shonkymaps where OzTopo has nothing but tracks.,

What ever you buy you are best to get the CD rather than the sd card , this way you can view the maps on the laptop , also when it comes to an upgrade you won't have to pay the full amount either .

OzTopoV3 will be out soon which will also be auto routable but not 3d

I'm coming to the conclusion that for my uses Oztopo is pretty crappy.

If you're used to getting out a paper topo map in 1:50 or 1:100 and seeing what's there, planning a route and identifying key local features like cliff faces, seasonal creeks etc then you'll find it very clunky and missing many of the features that paper maps show.

I'm used to seeing topo maps with 1:25,000 and while I don't mind missing some "features".....I can't work out why most tracks would be missing ?? ( talking Shonky here )

If I'm going to be say travelling thru the Flinders ranges, why would I buy topo maps for the Garmin if the city navigation shows the same tracks ?? ( or more ?? )

Why indeed?

That said, tracks in that area won't change that often so older digital maps won't suffer built-in obsolescence.

I'd be interested in how much more up-to-date Hema dig maps are since common routes have been GPS mapped; I don't think they work on Garmins though but am happy to be corrected.

As far as I'm concerned the only advantage to Oztopo is auto-routing and this is not available in it with many smaller tracks as best I can make out.

And the last time I tried to look up a town with Oztopo and Mapsource it couldn't find it, despite the town being marked on the map.

I'm heading for the FR later in the year and the Hema paper map of the area is very nicely produced. As a 'map' of the same area Oztopo looks like rubbish.

I'm also going to the Flinders later in the year, and I have already bought a good Hema map, but it would be pointless ( wouldn't it ?? ) loading on something like Shonky to the Garmin if it doesn't show any more ( or maybe less ) than the city stuff already there ??

That would be my view.

You can still use the Nuvi to record a track log to help you recover from geographic embarassment.

(And you're sure that CN includes 4X4 tracks over there?).
