Why is "Spell-check" not used in posts ?

The "poll" is presently running to ascertain if we would agree to spell-check being automatically launched when you submit a post is getting pathetic response from 'forum' users.

In some posts I'm appalled at some of the spelling on here, the "spell-checker" is there, is free and easy to use - just click on the "spell check" button, see your own spelling mistakes and correct them, before others have to read them.

YES- (157 votes )

NO- (22 votes )

Total Votes: 179

Why would you not vote ?
or
Why would you not vote for it to be launched "automatically" ??

Is it the message:
"Server Error in '/' Application. Index was outside the bounds of the array" that stops some ?

Unfortunately spell check can only check spelling not the intended use of a word so there their and they're will be spelt correctly but not necessarily in context !!

I for one never use spell checkers because they are usually US based and they can't spell anyway !! colour etc etc ..

My 2 dimes worth ! LOL

Rgds

Mandrake - just used spell check and it can spell colour !! LOL

If you use Firefox you can choose amongst US, GB and AUS spell checkers - You go to Tools > AddOns and download the one you wish to use. My Firefox uses the AUS spell checker to automattically check all the forums I dabble in.

mine are 25 and 21 yrs, so I had to put up with it, I learnt you can't readily change them and figured it was easier to reply in their terms than winge at them, I use the terminology I believe is required for the situation.

I would not chat my Solicitor in the same way I chat with them.

I try to spell correctly, even use a Dictionary some times, but now and again I get lazy, but then again this Forum is about 4x4's / Camping / ect, not Grammar and
Spelling, geez I left School after grade 8 which in my youth was Scholarship, and took on a Five Year Plumbing Apprenticeship, and found half the things I learn't at school didn't help.

It seems that a lot of people just cant spell and therefore dont know they are making mistakes.
If you dont know what is correct you probably wont use the spell checker.

I think an auto check is a great idea.

I also think an edit function would be helpful.

Firstly I was unaware that a poll was running.
Secondly, I spell really well but often have typos , so who cares?
hirdly, I like to read people's post and responses - as they are - from their hearts.
Fourthly, this is about camping and travel and fun things it doesn't matter about the spelling police frankly. There are enough restrictions in life now.

True to an extent, but the forum also relies on clear communication of ideas and knowledge - some posts (and they're the exception) are very difficult to decipher and you end up having to read through them a few times to work out what's being said. Personally I think a lot of it comes down to how much respect you have for your audience, and whether you can be bothered spending a few extra seconds to type proper sentences.

Couldnt agree more Ruth, in fact i sometime deliberately spell stuff wrong if my mood wants too.
Who gives a stuff anyway, except for Bushwacker and Mainey.
Sorry that they feel they have to vote on the poll 157 times to make there point.
MY choice to present my post/answer as i want it.
Read it as it comes off or dont read it at all, YOUR choice.
The other reason i wouldnt be in favour is the extra time it takes and it picks up stuff that doesnt matter, so i dont bother.
Hope if this insane idea gets up that PAYING MEMBERS get the option to turn it off.

Hi Ruth, havent got around to answering your enquiry as to our being the other day, we are well thanks, busy time for us here, also cold and wetter than it has been for many winters which is good for the country.
Unfortunately we wont get up that way for a while, but i hear you are due down here sometime LOL, maybe we could organize a SA EO gathering and invite you and Ian as guests of honour, will see what we can do LOL
Hows the grandy count going, we are still stuck on 5, but they take up a lot of our time one way and another, great times to be young enough to enjoy them.

Hello Pesty, did you hear we are going to be in SA in March 2010? Going fishing and visiting - probably around Clare and Kadina as well (not the fishing there).
Still only 3 girl grandies - nearly 4, 2 and bit and 1 and bit. That's it for a while - I've been playing grannie with the younger two as their mother went back to emergency room nursing. so I get to play grannie and they get free babysitting and I try and impose my rules and regulations and moral turpitude on them when the parents aren't around and teach them about chocolate and treats and bribery to stop tantrums - all the things I wouldn't do with their parents! Needless to say none of it is working but I have a lovely time with them - when they come to my place they run riot, then I let the dogs in to clean up the floor and the littlest ones face after meals - much easier.
Wish I was younger so I could keep up with them - I've had it after a full day - probably all the cajoling I have to do, the watching of the videos (I like in The Night Garden best) and crawling around the floor playing blocks. Didn't have as much time when I had kids there was always housework/gardening to do.
So now this is totally off topic so we might get moderated.
Pesty, isn't it sad that we've all had more fun on this topic than any other on here for quite a while? LOL You must have been talking to Stephen L?

It is not only bad spelling we get on here but also bad grammar. I believe that it is only the over fifties that can spell and use grammar properly although English is a mongrel language and some of our words are very difficult to understand and a number of rules contradict themselves.

Pathetic response from forum users???? That is incorrect. You cannot expect polls to be 100% utilised, especially when located in areas some may not visit often. A 10% utilisation of this poll seems acceptable especially on a dynamic site with so much information to absorb.

Why would you not vote ?

Because we may not have known about it.....not everyone looks at all information everywhere, this being the first time i have seen/heard about it.

or
Why would you not vote for it to be launched "automatically" ??

What's wrong with the feature being available to those that feel they need to use it, rather than pushing it automatically. I'm happy to not use it, as i feel my spelling is acceptable, and the odd spelling error should not affect the overall nature of my posting.

Maybe a cookie enabled setting to allow those who wish to bypass this automagic system would be handy.

Happy to vote no.

There are many good examples above of who should use the spell checker. Please note that I am not referring to the "tongue-in-cheek" posts. A little mirth is good. However I say this;

No automatic spelling. I hate being prompted for a different spelling when I am drafting something. I prefer to wait until I have finished the draft. That way the train of though that I am trying to express is not lost.

Leave the spell checker option as a user initiated function. It will not help bad grammar nor the misuse or lack of punctuation but it may at least help eliminating the SMS trend with abbreviations and acronyms. I like the "lots of love" interpretation of "lol".

However, I would remove the option to "Add" words in the spell checker from the general users screen. Keep that option under the control of the system administrator.

My two cents worth.

Phil

No problems with a spellchecker as long as it doesn't irritate me everytime I post because the word or abbreviation I use is not in the dictionary. Hope it doesn't slow the site down!

I see more of a problem with grammer and the mis-use of capitals and punctuation marks. I don't think there's a way around that except education.

Because there is no plural of "you" in the english language - when I say "you" it could mean you only or specifically, or it could mean you lot as in all of you. It seems usually the southern states are the ones that worry most about this...
In the US, they say: y'all
In Aus, they say: yous

BTW: I'm not from Vic (just wanted to clarify that!)

Pesty, it's only a "spell check" system, has nothing to do with, as you've written "grammar and paragraghs" (paragraphs) and will only take seconds for most people, because there are no spelling mistakes in most posts.

Yes, agree with you, it definitely will take a while with some, only because of their lousy grasp of the English language.

Rolly, good point about the use of you/thou/thee etc. and it applies in the French as well -

Vous is plural for you and is used everywhere (whether singular or plural) unless speaking to someone close when Tu is used, but very disrespectful if using Tu when should be using Vous.

Occasional mis-spelling of a word (such as "grammer" instead of grammar, lol) does not cause me a problem. And the education system fell into a hole for a few years by placing less emphasis on spelling and grammar so we have a generation whose use of the language appears less in the view of many of us oldies.

However, what really does surprise me is that those who were not more drilled in "English" have not learned in post-school years by simple observation. In particular the use, or rather misuse, of words such as "there, their, they're" an "too, to, two" is common and can cause some confusion when reading.

I would have thought that someone who uses say "there" in all cases would stop and think about it when he reads a "their" and think "hello, what is that word?" and "is that perhaps the right one to be using?". But I have encountered quite a few people who are now well out of school and in positions where they need to use quite a bit of written language who plough-on with their mis-spelling and are either oblivious of it or simply don't care!

I know English can be a bit of a brute with its multiple meanings of the same spelling but I am dismayed that some cannot put in even a little effort to improve their communication skills.

(God, I hope that there are no spelling or grammatical errors in this posting!)

Cheers

You should have capital letters at the beginning of a sentence ie. when someone new begins to speak, as in: "Hello, what is that word?"!!

Seriously though: "And the education system fell into a hole for a few years"
I wish it was only for a few years - from all reports I've heard, generally it's still on that slippery slope of decline. Phrases are increasingly being replaced by acronyms, soon we'll all be reduced to drawing stick-figure pictures like cavemen.

I will own up, I voted NO.

Have had a running battle with Microsoft Word spell checker (isn't it 'spellling check'?, I am not trying to cast spells), and did try and use the Exploroz spelling checker at one stage, but became so frustrated because they spell colour as color, don't even try and use neighbour. The MS Word one I have set to UK and it still has problems.

Just tried running spelling check and it doesn't like 'color', hurray, David has got onto those.

Now put in some manufacturers such as toyo and see what happens. Have to add it to dictionary. Here we go again, teaching a spelling check programme how to spell.

Effective communication is about ensuring the recipient understands what you are trying to say. As long as the recipient understands you, who gives a rats’ how you say it?

Despite having attained the age of “grumpy old man”; spelling, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation is the least of my concerns when reading posts. As long as I can understand the contents of the post without confusion, all that is proved by “Shakespearian Posts” is the level of education (and sometimes age) of the poster and the level of care they take.

Being a voracious and fast reader, I tend not to read words; rather the concepts inherent in words. Bad spelling, poor vocabulary or poor sentence construction might slow my reading speed, but also can create some interesting images. In a post earlier this week, someone used the word squash rather that quash. I knew what they were trying to say, but within the context of the post, a random image ran through my mind of a giant tomato landing “Splat!” on Parliament House

“Shakespearean Posts”: pedantic, nitpicking, dull posts; perfectly structured, impeccably written and finely polished, but as boring as bat…guano

When I was writing the post, I was looking for a cliché which would allude to something which was perfectly written but as helpful as mammary glands on male bovine. Given the memories of many people of sitting with other spotty faced adolescents taking turns to read “Romeo and Juliet”, I made it the expression up, hoping that others would understand it as an adequate allusion

Misjudged the audience

Should not one employ single 'quotation' marks as in; 'Shake... Quotes', when one is only using quote marks for emphasis, juxtaposed to properly using quote marks " " for verbatim quotations?

Cheers.

Shakespeare was anything but pedantic in his use of English. There were even variations in the spelling of "Shakespeare". It was a later age that got nitpicky about spelling and grammar.
And we continue to abuse new Australians for being slow to learn the language...
When I was teaching traditional aboriginal men English, I always started with a brief history of the language. Most of them already used at least three indigenous languages. Once the men realized that English wasn't a single language, but a mix of many languages, they learnt much faster because they stopped trying to find a "system" of consistent rules and just accepted the irregularities coming from a mix of languages.

Di that's a load of absolute rubbish spawned by some who are intent on publishing some "original work of science". Yes, I did read the original report and thought at the time that some poor tutors have wasted much of their time trying to educate prats such as them.

Of course it is possible to grasp the intended meaning of a written expression even if it is in a bastardized form, but it is also a lot harder to read and demands more effort from the reader. Just as it is possible to observe a road through a somewhat dirty and obscured windscreen but it takes more effort and has some perils!

The language, any language, has been constructed and developed over time with the purposeful intent of expressing a communication to others and there is some value in using well formed expression in order to ensure that the reader (or listener for that matter) can understand the expression without error. After all, if you have taken the time to make an expression, it could be expected that you would want the recipient to actually understand what your message was. Surely this is the essence of effective communication. Furthermore, why should I have to put in extra effort to try and clearly understand what someone else is offering me?

Damn the bogans I say!

Cheers

Allan, I am curious to know how you judge and identify persons writing on forums when English is their second language.

I recall a few years ago a darling young lass from China who posted on aforum and was attacked by the linguistics and spelling police. They chewed her up and spat her out and finally someone who knew her posted her country of residence.

She had so much useful information to offer but NEVER returned to that forum.

I wonder what people think of my attempts at my second language. I am lucky to write any sentence with correct syntax.

I receive lots of emails from my grandchildren and sometimes I need a teenage lingo dictionary to comprehend some messages but each and every email is cherished.

I am happy to put an effort in to understand

My earlier posting was in fun

Di,

Yes of course your earlier posting was in fun. This whole forum is fun, is it not.

And I don't judge persons writing on forums but I may pass some judgement on what they say. It was what the Cambridge twits proposed that I took exception to, not on what quality of human beings they were.

HOWEVER, in my experience (which sadly is extensive!) it is not those using a second language that cannot handle their "theres and toos" but good 'ol Aussies who are simply too lazy or stupid to put in some effort.

And of course you would cherish your grandchildren's emails, notwithstanding the difficulty of comprehension ............. they're family god-dammit...... we created them!

Now you figure if this posting is in fun.

And I still say damn the bogans. But not the immigrant ones of course!
Cheers

The Cambridge lot weren't twits, they were dead right. Experienced readers skim the words and pick up meaning from first and last letters and context, they don't spell out every word to themselves, and I will bet if you check yourself that you don't either. The only readers who do this are learners or readers who come across an unfamiliar word or a sentence that has a meaning that surprises the reader and they double check. This is where all the hoo ha between teachers who only want readers taught by phonetics and those who think research shows readers should learn from whole word techniques comes about.

Jim,
it was only meant to get some attention to the "spell check poll"
(obviously it has failed dismally)

I would rather get involved with a refrigeration "punch-on"
as the posters there, as a general rule, often think first then post because it's 'their' fridge they are talking about and don't like to see it denigrated by the users of that 'other' brand :-))

ps..

Sometimes forumites have to misspell some words or you get moderated:-)

I tend to use ieSpell which is very quick and non-obtrusive, but I don't always run it.
For this reason I voted YES for an automatic spell check, 'cause I don't wish to give the impression that I wasn't taught proper English in my youth.

It annoys me that correct spelling is not emphasized in Australian public schools any more.
Everybody makes mistakes now and again but some posts occasionally contain several spelling errors and poor grammar in one sentence. Some sentences are actually full paragraphs with no puctuation at all.

Their, ive gone and sed me peace avent eye.

This could also be put in the Funnies, but I think it is more appropriately placed in this thread. It was originally published in 'Mad' Magazine in the 1970's.
My fellow citizens, it is an honour and a pleasure to be here today. My opponent has openly admitted he feels an affinity toward your city, but I happen to like this area. It might be a salubrious place to him, but to me it is one of the nation's most delightful garden spots.

When I embarked upon this political campaign I hoped that it could be conducted on a high level and that my opponent would be willing to stick to the issues. Unfortunately, he has decided to be tractable instead -- to indulge in unequivocal language, to eschew the use of outright lies in his speeches, and even to make repeated veracious statements about me.

At first, I tried to ignore these scrupulous, unvarnished fidelities. Now I do so no longer. If my opponent wants a fight, he's going to get one !

It might be instructive to start with his background. My friends, have you ever accidentally dislodged a rock on the ground and seen what was underneath ? Well, exploring my opponent's background is dissimilar. All the slime and filth and corruption you could possibly imagine, even in your wildest dreams, are glaringly non existent in this man's life. And even during his childhood !

Let us take a very quick look at that childhood: It is a known fact that, on a number of occasions, he emulated older boys at a certain playground. It is also known that his parents not only permitted him to masticate excessively in their presence, but even urged him to do so. Most explicable of all, this man who poses as a paragon of virtue exacerbated his own sister while they were both teenagers !

I ask you, my fellow Americans: is this the kind of person we want in public office to set an example for our youth ? Of course, it's not surprising that he should have such a typically pristine background -- no, not when you consider the other members of his family:

His female relatives put on a constant pose of purity and innocence, and claim they are inscrutable, yet every one of them has taken part in hortatory activities
The men in the family are likewise completely amenable to moral suasion
My opponent's second cousin is a Mormon
His uncle was a flagrant heterosexual
His sister, who has always been obsessed by sects, once worked as a proselyte outside a church
His father was secretly chagrined at least a dozen times by matters of a pecuniary nature
His youngest brother wrote an essay extolling the virtues of being a homosapien
His great-aunt expired from a degenerative disease
His nephew subscribes to a phonographic magazine
His wife was a thespian before their marriage and even performed the act in front of paying customers
And his own mother had to resign from a women's organization in her later years because she was an admitted sexagenarian
Now what shall we say of the man himself ?

I can tell you in solemn truth that he is the very antithesis of political radicalism, economic irresponsibility, and personal depravity. His own record proves that he has frequently discountenanced treasonable, un-American philosophies and has perpetrated many overt acts as well.

He perambulated his infant son on the street
He practised nepotism with his uncle and first cousin
He attempted to interest a 13-year-old girl in philately
He participated in a séance at a private residence where, among other odd goings-on, there was incense
He has declared himself in favour of more homogeneity on college campuses
He has advocated social intercourse in mixed company -- and has taken part in such gatherings himself
He has been deliberately averse to crime in our streets
He has urged our Protestant and Jewish citizens to develop more catholic tastes
Last summer he committed a piscatorial act on a boat that was flying the American flag
Finally, at a time when we must be on our guard against all foreign "isms", he has coolly announced his belief in altruism -- and his fervent hope that some day this entire nation will be altruistic !
I beg you, my friends, to oppose this man whose life and work and ideas are so openly and avowedly compatible with our American way of life. A vote for him would be a vote for the perpetuation of everything we hold dear.

The facts are clear; the record speaks for itself.

Do your duty.
