I will be travelling with the wife from the NSW Central Coast on her first 4x4 trip to Uluru . We have 2 options of travel to get there, 1st viaBroken Hill / Cameron's Cnr then Birdsville and the Plenty Hwy or south via the Strezlecki & Oodnadatta Track & Stuart Hwy. She is not to open to camp toilets and no shower's but it's all part of the overall out back Australia experience. Can you all give HER some encouragement as I am trying to show her THE TRUE AUSTRALIA not just the coast that she is used to. Also could you recommend WHIch way to go first as we will be doing the return either way. OR some other way

Hi zogs
Do what I did mate, get her a port-a-potty and a 12volt immersion (Coleman)shower pump with rose, also a small toilet tent and a bucket for the warm shower water. Total cost around $175 or possibly less.
Result= 1 happy wife.

That's got to be good value.
Colin.

I'm with Colin- the beauty of taking your own 12V shower and toilet (even the Jimmy's thunder box type) means you travel with your own private set of amenities... you get to stay out of the crowds and you don't have to use the grotty public bathrooms! All you need is a couple of pop up shower tents and you are set :)

Hi zogs

I agree with Colin. My husband and I have just got back from six weeks in a tent including travelling the Goog track and the Simpson desert. We took a porti potty put it under the camp stretcher at night so I didn't have to go out in the dark. When we didn't set up the shower I just used about a litre of water and had a good sponge. Its a great country and has to be seen. Hope this can help you convince your wife. Regards Kay

So I don't suppose she will take to walking into the scrub with a shovel over her shoulder and a dunny roll under the arm ???

But amazing how quick they learn when the jobs gotta be done !!!

My missus was the same as yours....but now enjoys the "rough" type of camping....although the walking into the scrub with a shovel is not high on her list of favorites !!!!

I am with you Gronk. My wife started off not wanting to stay anywhere but in good caravan parks, now she is happy just about anywhere as long as it is peaceful.

But to answer The Zogs.

If you stay in any of the centres you have mentioned in your question you will be able to find a shower and toilet. They will vary in quality and distance from your camp but you should be able to satisfy her needs.

That is how I trained my boss. With toilets of varying quality and distance from camp she started to use the shovel and a folding seat (About $15 from any camping store). Pretty soon she started looking for a spot with a view.

I always say "Eat well and sleep well the rest will take care of itself."

Hi there The Zogs, Its what I call "horses for Courses". I agree if you are going to "do it" by way of seeing the true Australia, you need to get a bit off the beaten track. We are not "off roaders" but like to get away from van parks etc & into easy accessible national parks & the like & first started with a van without toot & shower.

A simple portable potty & a shower tent served my wifes toilet needs and I made up a bucket with a shower rose fitted in which we put warm water heated on the stove & hey presto she was able to have a shower in privacy & cleanliness.
I have read on this Forum where others have simply put warm water in one of those garden sprayers & then used it as a shower. You will be amazed at how good a shower you can have with the use of very little water.

And if you are young & frisky.......... You can use the garden sprayer to squirt your wife while she showers!! OR....... fit a light in the shower tent, settle back at your camp fire with a coldy & watch the silhouette. Sorry, I will get back in my kennel now! Cheers
