Evening all. I'm looking to travel to the Valley of Lagoons (West of Cardwell/Ingham) from Townsville, but I'm thinking about taking a back road/track. From what I can work out, the route I'm looking at turns North off the Herveys Range Developmental Road between the Star River and Burdekin River. I've seen the sign for Paluma at the turn off but I haven't taken the road before. The road goes roughly North/North West and eventually links up to the Lava Plains Mt Fox Road, apparently.

I'm looking for any general info about the route. It seems that parts of it are pretty minor tracks, and other parts are pretty major unsealed roads. How difficult is the route to navigate? I don't have a GPS to help me. What type of condition are the roads/tracks likely to be in? Creek/river crossing difficulty and depths would be useful and any other information at all would be appreciated. We're planning on taking a single vehicle (80 series cruiser).

This is the general route, I think. It looks like the road crosses the Burdekin River at a causeway just north of Mount Foxton. Then I think it's supposed to run North, basically parallel with the Burdekin and then cross it again near the mouth of Oakey Creek (just west of the Running River mouth), but it's kind of hard to follow in that section. Then it runs north again, basically parallel to another Burdekin feeder creek, which I can't find the name of (the next creek west of Oakey Creek), before crossing that creek near a homestead. From there it runs generally North West and links up to the Lava Plains Mt Fox Road.

Thanks guys.

The road up to Paluma is very scenic (stop at Crystal creek) then just follow on through to Hidden Valley and then follow road north to Michael Creek then go left to Mt Fox (interesting mountain) then keep going west to Valley of lagoons.

To the north of Valley of Lagoon is the Herbert river (great campsite) and furthe on (dead end unfortunately, the road to Tully was damaged) are some spectacular falls coming down into the Herbert river gorge. Well worth a look.

Need a good map but basically just follow your nose. Interesting when wet but just a great drive through some great country when dry.

Enjoy

Thanks very much Alan, but I'm probably going to take the back road from Hervey's Range Dev Road through to Hidden Valley and then onto Valley of Lagoons. I've been up the front way (from the Bruce Hwy) a few times. Crystal Creek is definitely a nice stop.

Sounds like the Herbert is worth checking out up there. Thanks for the tip.

Hi
Sir Mick Curtain has opened the mine up again between Herveys Range Road and the paluma turnoff (hidden valley) Mt Moss I believe he calls it. The road is a graded 4 lane highway with very aggressive trucks and rangers patrolling the star river/running river area. Don't even think of stopping on the graded stretch. It is patrolled every 15 mins or so and you are told to move on in no uncertain terms. It used to be beautiful along the river and a great place to camp.......no more.
As for Paluma to Mount Fox........very dry at the moment and very dusty

Enjoy your trip anyway.

Very interesting info. Thanks Craig. When you say rangers, are you referring to QPWS rangers, or are they employed by the mine? Why are they so anal about people stopping on the graded road? It all sounds a bit strange.

Thanks again.

they appear to be security guards employed by the mine but travel in hilux dual cabs with RANGER on the doors. The area in question was a very popular area to camp for Townsville residents for many years. Whilst the mine has provided employment for many, the downside is that the area that was once available to all is now available to none. The security's attitude is that if the mine allows camping on its lease then it has a duty of care to campers. Knowing how anal some people can be these days they will be on to their lawyers and trying to sue the mine every time they trip over a stick.

Welcome to WPH&S.............the latest replacement for common sense.

Craig,
Do you know roughly how long it would take me to drive this route from Herveys Range Road to the Valley of Lagoons? People I've spoken to are telling me different things, from 3 hours to 6 hours. It would be pretty slow going if it does take 6 hours.

Thanks mate
