Hi all, we are travelling from Lawn Hill to Longreach soon in our Hilux towing an off road camper. I am not sure as to which way to go, we will have a least 3 weeks to get there. Head east to the coast, drift south east or what. Can you help me with possible places of interest.

Thanks Wato35

Drive down through Riverseligh Station to the south, passing the Riversleigh Fossils, and then onto Camooweal...and onwards to Longreach..

Just check on the Gregory downs road from Cammoweal, there was a sign saying it was closed a few days ago.

Another way to go is down to the Curry then a few kays west on the Barkley highway, turn south on the Duchess road then turn left to Malbon and on down through Kuridala, Selwyn and down to Toolebuc and on through the Finicune range to middleton and east to Winton, make sure you get detailed maps though.

Have a good one

Wato35,

Option 1: From Lawn Hill, go to Gregory Downs, Burke & Wills Roadhouse, Julia Creek then Kynuna and Longreach

Option 2: As suggested in earlier reply, Riversleigh, Comooweal, Mt Isa, Cloncurry, McKinley, Kynuna and Longreach

As for things to look at, well I suppose it depends on what you want to see.

Sorry I cant be of further help.

Cheers,

Cruiser

Hi Cruiser,
Thanks for that, we like staying near water, especially if I can catch a fish.
We also like camping in the middle of no-where and enjoy a nice came fire.

Cheers

There's a good free camp right on the river near the old Highway bridge, about 5 k's N/W of Longreach, nth side of highway. The turnoff looks an access road into a gravel pit. We found it after we set up in town, so didn't bother, but looked good. Also local fishing/boating club facilities available there. Was fairly popular late May when we went through, but hey, it's free, and near the water.
Have fun.

Fred.

If you have the time, thoroughly recommend detouring to Dimantina Lakes NP, ca 190km south of Boulia,300km WNW of Winton

3 years ago we went up via Gregory Downs and found it a far superior road surface to Riversleigh to Mt Isa. Riversligh are well worh the look only ca 50kim south of Lawn Hill.
Recent travellers sdaid Kinfisher 190km north of Lawn Hill was also well worth the look.
