I know its been done before but im asking again, my parents have a jayco tandem road van and am thinking of going to Innamincka via white cliffs.
Anyone gone this way and would it be ok?
If not then what about via Lynhurst.
cheers

Shane.

The track from Lyndhurst to Innaminka is A1. Take it easy and I'd say you'd be right.

I got this far and I am still going :-)

PS If I borrowed something I would never treat it like it was my own.
I would take care of it instead.

Dug,

Don't set the drag too tight, now you've hooked one you don't want to get broken off!

I remember fishing for tiger sharks at the mouth of the Pennefather River about 25 years ago using a Toyota PTO winch to land them!

Does that qualify?

Hi Shane,

I recently completed the trip towing my off-road caravan the other way round - via Arkaroola, Moolawatana up to Innamincka the back via Cameron Corner/ Tibooburra to White Cliffs. The worst part was the corrugations on the section just before White Cliffs - the remainder is easy going if you take it slow. My caravan is a compact off-roader - Conqueror Commander - but if you take it easy and tie everything down inside the caravan I don't believe there would be problems.

The road from Tibooburra to Strzelecki is well worth suffering the few bumps to get there. Just keep the speed down, let the tyres down a tad and take an extra spare for the caravan as well if possible, but not essential.

Regards,
Africampers

Shane,

The road to Innamincka via Lyndhurst (Strzelecki Track) is generally a first class track, with a crushed rubble base at the northern end and also in the process of having a major upgrade being done along its route.

Having said that I would still not take an on road van along the track.
The main problem with an on road van is that the internal cupboards and fittings are not designed to take constant shaking and vibration which is common on off-road tracks. They can be shaken to pieces and I have heard of it happening although I don't own a van myself.

Secondly, your folks would want to have a very good stone guard mounted on the van's draw bar, an "impact" bra fitted to the front surface of the van and a rear window protector on the back of the towing vehicle.

Off road vans are specifically designed to take the type of treatment that will occur when travelling on unsealed surfaces and the suspension is also important to limit the possibility of premature failure and give higher ground clearance.

We’ve just got back from there. There has been a lot of water dumped on the Paroo North of White Cliffs; most of it would have dried out by now. The lower section is Gibba and rock, but as you head further north in the vicinity of Klondyke Station the road turns to sand, which is an easy travel up to Wanaaring.

Your folks will need to take it pretty easy with a caravan on the lower section, but it can be done with a bit of common sense. They’ll probably finish up with a bit of damage to the van if they don’t take it real slow.

It’s an interesting post in that you’re going through White Cliffs and then Innamincka. Drop me a post and I can take you through some of the other areas.

Regards

Kim
