I am in the market for an GOOD portable/in car air compressor that can do the job inflating 4x4 tyres.I have tried a few so called good brands only to have them fail after a few inflations(trailer included) after letting the tyres down.
Its not much fun having them fail in remote areas and having to drive with soft tyres. One unit had plastic valves that failed due to the heat air compressors
generate.I kept spare parts for this purpose after a failure.
Cheers

I ditto that, exellent, so much so that when I air up a few of my club mates use
mine too when their $50 specials drop dead.
Mine is now 3 years old and as good as the day I bought it. Colin.

I got one too and it still does 4 big tyres from 17psi-45 in 15mins after 4 years of regular use.
Guage not working after I lent it to somebody recently but Bushranger are willing to repair it

Like you i have had 2
well known brand name pumps disintegrate - JUST after warranty - though bugger it will buy a cheapy of ebay - see how it goes
Bought this one ----
ebay link In summer time it gets used EVERY weekend to inflate my tires on the Nissan from 15 PSI to 40 + caravan - after being on the sand ( 6 tires ) then if friends come also then add another 4 on top been using it now for 2 years - never missed a beat and for $80 i paid for it ... i will probably just give my old one away and buy another ( even though its working fine )
People say you get what you pay for ---- true in some cases , but not always the truth - a compressor you pay $600 can break down just as quickly as one bought for $100 - anything made by man, is made to fail

sorry for lack of Punctuation , just woke up -- Forgot to add -- a 5 Year warranty is useless to you when your stuck in the middle of nowhere with low tires... its only good when close to
home where you can return it for repair

My local TJM (
Toowoomba) has an American made compressor on special for $280 (allegedly reduced from $380). 5 year warranty. Possibly the same price at all TJMs.

I have had my ARB under bonnet going for around 4 years and it's never missed a beat and I don't know how long before then since it came with the truck. I had a good look at their new portable one and it looks like a very nice unit if you don't want a under bonnet one

you are going to get as many answers as brands and all positive & negative!
my two bobs worth is that I have two 4WD equipped for off road use (remote area)...(couldnt bring myself to sell the old one when I purchased the new LC and so now the kids use it)......... and both have Bluetongues (two each).... a twin tongue for the main use and a single tongue for back up
They have been very reliable for me and the only reason I carry two in each vehicle is simply because no amount of warranty or bad luck or wear and tear etc is going to forgive you when you are on your own out there....for the record that hasn't happened as yet
cheers

I have used bushranger maxair for 3 years now without any problems and it is very fast...
But i must say i just got new airlockers fitted and ARB fitted the new type arb compressor and wow that thing inflates tyres almost twice as fast as the maxair...
Very impressed.

Yes, I've always been an advocate of the Maxair too and recently replaced
mine with a Grand Boss (a much larger compressor, but about the same inflation times).
However, I have read in a lot of articles/comparisons etc, that this new ARB unit is the ducks guts......
If I was in the market for a new one, that's what I'd be getting now too. The Maxair has sooooo many copies and clones getting around that look exactly the same (but aren't as good), it'd be hard to be sure you're actually getting a proper Maxair....aand as you say, the ARB is actually faster anyway.

Same as Roachie I bought a Grande Boss with air tank to go with the air bag
suspension. Had it for about a year and works fine. About $400 so not cheap but I wanted a reliable one.
With my previous landcruiser I had a converted twin piston aircond compressor unit with a
home made bracket next to my actual air condition compressor. Now that was the best and most reliable pump I had and with reving up the engine you could pump a flat tyre up quicker than any other compressor even my commercial work compressor. I did run the air into a tank with a 120psi relief valve.

I went down the same path as Serendipity of Mandurah's old landcruiser and installed a second hand air/con compressor [one with a sump] via a pulley to the motor and then an air line to an old "out-of-date" LPG gas bottle as the reserve tank. Ive been using it for 16 years now[a lot of beach work] and it has never missed a beat ,in fact it has pretty much beaten every other "
shop bought" compressor that have been pitted against it.
It wont flatten a battery 'cause it is driven off the engine.
It can pump up a tyre as fast as you can let one down and I have used it to reseat beads.
The most tyres I've pumped up in one continuous go is 20[4 x 4WD + 2 x trailor]
and it didn't show any signs of failing.
If you want something very reliable and long-lived and have the space in your engine bay to mount a compressor on your motor, the above system ,IMHO, is the best way to go. Especially if you are a DIY type.

Have the new ARB compressor under the bonnet - excellent. Inflates a 285/75/16 from 18 psi to 40 psi in around 4 minutes.
The MaxAir are also very good. Had one of these for about 3 years - no problems and around the same time as the ARB to inflate as above.
All the best,
Paul

I have one of these -
ABR Sidewinder
I am very happy with it. It gets a regular workout and will do a 285 tyre from 15 psi to 45 psi in about 2.5 minutes.
It is not all about speed though and the Sidewinder unit has a 45 minute duty cycle which means I can raise the pressures on 3 or 4 vehicles without stopping to cool.

I bought
this one (click here) from eBay in
Sydney for $120 delivered !!! I was the only one to bid.
It pumps an 18" tyre from 20 to 40 psi in 2 minutes, and it gets barely warm doing it. The Dual Cylinder ones are the only way to go !
The hose has an excellent deflator with settable pressure on it.
It seems electrically and mechanically identical to the Projecta Typhoon and the one Sidewinder sells.
