Morning all,

My mate is looking at a 1999 TI Pathfinder, looking to change from his 3.2 petrol Jackaroo, to reduce the amount of money he is spending on fuel each week, since he moved farther from his workplace.

This is on dual fuel. From reviews I have read, the petrol Pathy is no better than the older Jacks on petrol, can anyone advise the expected fuel economy savings (or otherwise) from an LPG converted Pathy?

Also of concern is the inspection process for LPG systems..... how often is the 'full' inspection req'd in NSW. The Pathy is nearing 10 yrs old, not sure if this is when the lpg tank needs recertification or not. Can anyone advise please? He realizes that inspections are necessary for safety, but if this is a fairly expensive exercise, and due soon, it may reflect on his purchase,(or non purchase). Any ballpark figures?

Also, though I had a quick look, I could not see how old the gas tank was, it may only be a few yrs old for all we know... how can I find this info out for him.

He is a great mate, and like most of us, on a budget, so he needs as much info as he can get before he spends his money. Neither of us have had anything to do with LPG fuelled cars before, so we are a bit lost. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Dave

Dave, there should be stamped plate under the bonnet that shows installation date, who installed it, container test date & serial no. etc. Also should have a plate on the container showing original test date, manufacturers details, serial no. etc.
When it comes to rego and pink slip time, you have to get it ispected by a LPG certified installer/inspection station, who include the LPG inspection on the pink slip, or inspection certificate.
AFAIK (and I stand to be corrected) there is no use by date for the tank, and the whole system is checked each year prior to rego. Mine was only $45 this year for the rego cert, which included the LPG check.
Really happy with my LPG in the Triton, especially now it's back to 52 cpl.
Hoped this helps.

Cheers from Fred.

Dave,

If it's been done properly and legally it should have some form of "Compliance Plate" under the bonnet. This has all relevant details stamped on it.

I just had look at mine and it is labelled AAFRB (Alternative Automotive Fuels Registration Board Victoria). So it would appear that it varies from State to State, but I imagine all States have some legislative requirements.

Cheers,

Jim.

Hi, I had a 99 Pathy ST so it's an identical engine to your mates. Had it on LPG and 50 litres got me 225km around Sydney. Best ever was 313km on a highway run. Towing 1200kg got down to 175km to 195km depending on headwinds and speed. Sitting on 110 - 120 it guzzles badly - the 175 while at 90 to 100 it's closer to 195. Now have an 01 model and the gas filler is in with the petrol cap- before it was on the towbar- and you can't go wrong with LPG at 47.9cpl. Cheers, Warrie
