I am in the process of fitting a rear seat to my fj40 shorty, according to the compliance plate it's a 3 seater but only has the front two seats, I am wanting to put a side jump seat on, but not sure as to where to start as far as the legality and the safety issues go.
I think I might even need to modify my roll bar as well for the passengers, any idea on where to start or who to see? I live in Sydney's, but obviously I'm happy to take it to a right person any where in Sydney if needs to
be.
Any help is appreciated.

I think in NSW, the RTA will be the place to speak to,They will ultimately have the last say.
Have fun dealing with a Goverment dept.
You say its a two seater, but says 3 on the compliance plate, means to me that it already has been modified, no real surprise there.
You will proberly find to get it passed (with the 3rd seat) it will have to be inspected by an RTA approved engineer and it WILL cost you.

I put back seats into a BJ a long time ago in QLD. Yes the roll bar needs to be padded and needs to be certain dimensions aways from heads etc.
Do the research first - it's not a fun job.

Hi,

I stand to be corrected here but I thought the shorty 40 came with a drivers bucket and a cut down bench in the front as standard and this was how they made it to be classed as a 3 seater. Not 100% sure on this but it may be something to check out.

Cheers

Thanks, I'll check with RTA and see how that goes, front bench seat might be an option but locating one would be challenging.

Hi,
I have an '80 fj40 which was also a 3 seater. They are technically utes. I just had two side seats fitted into the rear so I could take the kids safely. I bought the seats on ebay and had them fitted by authorised installers in western Sydney. Cost a fair bit but I wanted it done properly with seatbelts and engineering certificate.

Once done you then have to take it to another authorised inspection station for a blue slip. Then you take the engineering certificate and blue slip (and weighbridge certificate) and change of records form and take it to the RTA.

Now I have an FJ with legal 6 seat capacity (had the front buckets engineered too). I also got the tyre change ( to 31 x 10.5) certified too.

All up it was around $1700!

Best
Graham

That sounds like the way to go, I'm hoping to get out of it cheaper as it's only one seat and I have the seat as well, can you give me his details?
so he fits and certifies them correct?
