Does anyone have the latest info on the access across the Simpson at Eyre
Creek. I have a group coming through in the first week of September & was wondering if the track is expected to be open or will the detour still be in use? Also how much further is the trip via the detour?
Thanks.

We were there 2 weeks ago and the detour was still required. It was aout 30km from the usual crossing to the detour crossing, and quite slow going. But the trip was very interesting and the
Creek at the new crossing is very beautiful- a great place to
camp.

We agree with Bezza apart from the length of the detour. We reckon it was more like 50K's. However its
well worth the trip. We were there in June and the green
oasis view as you crest the red
sand dunes (after an easterly transit of the simpson) is spectacular. What condition the straight run will be in September is anyones guess, but our view is that we were lucky to do the detour at this time.Image Could Not Be Found

G'day Paul,
We reckon it was about a 70km detour (LOL), including the return onto the main track. It was a great drive and I was more concerned about not being able to do it as it's not accessable unless the
creek is in flood. Frankly I would prefer the detour and see the
creek as we did.
Myles.

Was talking with an VKS737 member up there the other night on
HF radio - he reported that the 'lower detour' is now usable - quite firm based and shallow enough for crossing with the usual care. I'm not familiar with that track but his indication was that most of the detour could now be avoided.

And again tonight (080809) - a member reports that two channels need to be crossed for the Eyre - a detour from the traditional route involves distances of about 6km only, for each channel - 12km all up.

Hi Seto, I came through there Tues 04/08 as per above reply two detours to south about 5-6 Kms each main channel ankle deep, currently in Alice after spending a nice night with
mine hosts at Mount Dare.
Cheers
Rob Mac
