We love our little Dove (2006 model), but it is more for families, the setting up of beds is a bit of a pain, would like ease of setup (especially on the road) so we thought we would like to upgrade later in the year after we do a run down to Adelaide from Gold Coast. We have an X Trail so want something that will tow well.

Ideally would like a 16-17 footer, with island queen bed (havent seen very many queen beds), dont need shower and toilet at this stage (prop a few more years haha).

We would like to spend approx $20 - $25K (second hand) and would like something similar to this:

Pop tops like Jayco Discovery or Sterling 16.52.2

Could you please recommend which makes are best and any disadvantages or going into this type of van?

Also, do vans hold their value?

Cheers Janice

PS Initially will be doing weekends away, annual leave and then travel for a 6 month period - onroad only.

Depends on how heavy it is, Our X Trail can tow 2.5t from memory.
But when towing it goes through the fuel :(

Hi there. I agree with your 2000 kg figure for the X Trail (as per the Red Book). I doubt you'll find a 16 to 17 ft van at much under 1500 kg Tare or 1900 kg ATM, unless you go back in years. Our 17 ft 6in Coromal Poptop is only 1000/1400, but it is also 20 years old and single axle. No TV or microwave for us, and plenty of our gear travels in the Prado, in order to keep the ATM down to 1400kg. It weighs 1200kg empty except for gas and water, so you could say the 'real' Tare is 200kg above the plated Tare.
A van with ATM of 1200 kg will be hard to find, implying a Tare of well under a tonne. I am amazed at the weight of even 13 to 14 ft vans these days (I have noticed, because I sometimes ponder about our next van, then I stop pondering when I see the choices!!).
Stories abound of ridiculous plated weights, with Tare weights that exclude gas bottles, air cons, water in the tank, TV and other 'optional extras', and some that are plain spurious. I recall one review in a mainstream mag where the kerbside weight (ie before any food, utensils, personal stuff, bedding, clothes) was within a few kg of the plated ATM, and so the van was basically useless unless the gas bottles were left behind, and the water tank left empty. Then there would be room for a tin of baked beans AND a pair of underpants!!
Mind you, we love our van, and have had great times with it, so it's all worthwhile.

Hello Janice.

Why not stay with Jayco and go hybrid wind up camper/caravan with the on road Expanda 12.37 Pop Tops. They tare at under 1200kg. You still have to sleep under canvas but the set up/pack up is allot less and they have the living room of a 19' caravan and are great for just two people. You can undersling the axle if you want a little more clearance. Still a road van though.

Hi Janice,

Another good one to consider is the AVan 525 series pop top. These are 17'3" body length and 15'9" internal length. Tare is 1270kg and they are 130kg ball weight. They don't have a queen bed but it is a good sized double and they are a single axle which you can get underslung to give better ground clearance.

I have a new one of these and so far am really happy with it.

We moved up from a Goldstream Star 2 camper and we are pleased we changed over. Much easier and quicker to set up and the island bed etc are really good features.

My belief with vans is that they initially drop a bit when you buy them but then the price seems to stabilise and they seem to hold their value quite well and certainly a lot better than a car.

Cheers..
Brian

Hi Janice
Have a look at the A'Van (A'Liner...Cruiser)
As for keeping their value, I believe that the longer you keep a van the less it has cost you to use. We had a 15ft van a few years back which we paid $1850 for and sold for $2500 ten years later, if you look after the van I think you can still get your money back a few years down the track.
Good luck

Thank you all for your helpful replies, and I think I will take the advice and stick with Dove and XTrail - it tows well and we have no other problems with it. We will keep it for the next couple of years and when we "take off" for good, probably will upgrade 4wd and caravan.

Until then, cheers to all of you super helpful forumers! :-)
