What is the better grease to use for wheel bearings on a camper with overide brakes??

I am going to replace the ones in the Trak Shak, this week.

Cheers Kev

Kev, same stuff you use in Darkie. No point buying anything different. If it's good enough for the cruiser then it will PROBABLY be good enough for the trailer.. :-))

John,

I'm all done :))

I use Castrol Grease on Darkie, so have just finished doing the bearings on the Trak Shak with Castrol APX T grease.

Shall see how it goes

Cheers Kev

Ya won't get much more 'fit for purpose' tha the APXT..

If ya have problems, then it won't be because of the brand/type of grease (unless ya use too little or too much of it;-))..

Kev, I use Moreys Red.
I was advised by our workshop manager that is what the company use on the earthmoving gear in the quarries and mines here.

I also have another set packed with grease and vacuum packed with a new seal in my spares box just in case.

What they use on earthmoving gear may not be suitable for a wheel bearing on a trailer....a lot of heavy machinery use high pressure , low speed stuff ,whereas trailers ( especially ones running brakes ) may need high melting point grease.....always good to check out the specs 1st before using anything..

Gronk, I have used Moreys Red for about 18 months now.

I usually stop about every 2 hours while travelling, and the first thing I do is put my hand on the trailer hubs to check the temperature.
There is hardly any heat in them at all thankfully.

I repacked them after 10K, and the grease was still coated all over the bearings.
It really does stick better than that other stuff that sticks on blankets.

Dave,

Will see how the APX T goes by the time we get to St George. If they get hot again, maybe we could do a "How To" for those who haven't done wheel bearing before at the Gathering seeing as the Trailers are relatively easy to do.

That way we could compare greases as well LOL

Sir Kev, I am sure there will be lots of people willing to watch from their camp chairs. Perhaps you could charge for viewing - but the advice from the gallery would be free :-))

2nd (or is that 5th) the blue marine greae.

Has handled a couple of trips on the CT and still looked like new.
Replaced anyway since it had been through a few creek crossings ovet the hubs.

I will have some spare in the tub with me at St George if you need it Kev. :o)

While we are on the subject of wheel bearings, another thing that is handy in the toolbox is a few of those nitrile disposable gloves.

They are the best thing to wear for skin protection if you are doing wheel bearings. They are thin and tough.

Kev, between all the drinkin an talkin and fishin and tossin and cookin, I don't think I will have time for packin at St George.

Hello Sir Kev,

The clay/bentone based HTB greases recommended for wheel bearings in disc brake passenger vehicles is not the best option for trailers. It is possible the lower
temperatures in the trailer application does not allow the grease to 'run'. This can cause the grease to remain in a more solid state and can allow moisture entry.

The better option is a lithium based grease recommended for wheel bearings. Lithium grease has a stickier composition with better properties to resist the entry of water.
