The weir is on
Katarapko Creek which branches off the Murray at Quest's Bend, just down river from Lock 4. The weir is a couple of kilometres along
Katarapko Creek from the Murray
junction.
A couple of years ago we camped at
Site 2 in The
Murray River National Park and I came across the weir when traversing the
Creek in our Tinny.
Water was flowing over the weir and the resultant "stirring of the waters" was certainly attracting fish.
A couple of fishefisher persons casting from the bank and I assume there is a road in from somewhere, but we, in our boat tied up to the opposite bank and cast back into the "turbulence", catching a couple of good sized Callop, as
well as the ever present Carp.
A lovely spot we were at and also had the
camp site to ourselves. In fact I think we had the whole
Park to ourselves, not seeing any other campers while we were there.
My wife and I were indulging in a skinny dip on the Sunday of our few days stay and had not long been out of the
water and dressed, when along came a group of kayakers paddling through a smaller tributary to the main
Creek adjacent to our
campsite. The team leader was a little surprised to see us as the
Park had been closed due to rain for some time previous to our visit. After finding the
park was open to vehicular traffic, they called up their support crew to pick them up at that spot rather than their alternative pick up point so we chewed the fat for a while until the support vehicles with kayak carriers on their trailers arrived.
We will return to that spot. The small tributary had Carp tailing in the shallows in the mornings while feeding and I intend trying out my fly fishing tackle on them.
We knocked a couple on the head with the priest I keep in the tackle box. just doing our bit for the ecology of the river.
Bill.
