We are heading out Lake Eyre way in Sept school hols. We only plan on doing stops of 2 nights max.
What is the consesnus in relation to if we should/need to put up a tarp over our tent-which is a Balack Wolf?
Maybe we could string up something from our roof rack over the tent>obvoiusly only would work if we could
camp close to our car.
Just wondering , as its just another thing to add to our packing list....

I always use a tarp if
camping for more than one night ....
Gives shade during the day and never have to pack up and stow a dew damp or rained on tent.
Only issue is the extra poles if your going to use them.

Mate,
I wouldn't bother. Never used one myself out there and come to think of it I haven't seen anyone else use one either.
Cheers

Having the means to make yourself a bit of temporary shade is always a good move IMV. That region is not noted as a shaded, leafy environment :-o)...... and the sun can be quite harsh at any time of the year.

Couldn't agree more about the value of shade, One tarp; two poles and two guys will give you quick sun protection for a quick stop, or in
camp. It rains once a decade in those parts too. I actually have a 9 foot plus bar permanently fixed to the near side of the roof rack to allow a decent size tarp to be used.

Hiya Holiday Hound,
The need for "under cover living" was the main criteria I applied when seeking a tent as a sometimes alternative to our camper trailer.
Looked at the Black Wolf Turbo and the Oztent and liked the larger awning on the Oztent which could be further enclosed with side panels if desired. This gives us excellent protection from both sun and rain while we
cook, or just sit & sip:-)
The vehicle can be backed up to the front of the awning and we have a great little
camp setup with minimal need to unload the vehicle.
I haven't found any need for a fly or tarp to gain extra area under cover for just the two of us, but it may depend on how big your family is. As for getting the tent wet, so what!. It is waterproof and soon dries out in a couple of hours, or when we get home.
Extra cover is good when there is a group of people and the addition of a good tarp, poles and ropes doesn't take up much extra room and can make the difference between a miserable, or fullfilling
camping experience.
On our last trip (with the camper trailer) we even took our gazebo which was put to good use for 6 people to sit under during the occasional shower of rain. It set the scene for some convivial group therapy, rather than each scuttling off to their own tents at the first
sign of rain.
So, even for two nights and regardless of the lack of probable rain at that time of the year, a tarp would be a practical choice, even as a self standing kitchen/dining/living area.
Bill.

Sometimes when we are feeling a bit lazy we only use the tarp and sleep in the car.
We have removed all extra seats and ended up with a double bed area.

Gidday
Irrespective of where you’re
camping or when, I’d recommend that a tarp is always carried. Even on a day trip in the bush.
Although I have an awning permanently attached to the car, the tarp can be very useful at times for other things apart from shade.
On occasions I’ve used it as a
water blind when crossing creeks, side wall for the awning when the cold wind bites and matting over mud.
It also helped me once to get out of a bog.
Regards
Kim
