Hello to all on the forum..

We are heading off next week from the Gold Coast down through to Dubbo, Hill end, Carcoar and across the Hay plains up into Mildura and on into Broken Hill for a couple of big 50th Birthdays. We are fully set up in our Jayco starcraft for Bush camping so no need for power and prefer to be away from caravan parkes. I have two questions

1. Can anyone recommend any good camping sites for this route that would be free and campfire friendly?

2. Where is the best point to go over the ranges less winding and steep.

I do have a camps 5 book and the national parks book for NSW but really I'm looking for places that have been personally experienced by those on this site.

Looking forward to your replies.

Kind Regards
Andrea

Hi Andrea, we are off to the west from southern NSW next Sat & plan to
freecamp at Maude on the Murrumbidgee River about 50k west of Hay on the
first night. Not been there but others have said it is ok, toilets there & pub
nearby. Not sure which ranges you refer to but I think I would go via
Beaudesert, Warwick to Goondawindi then south.Unless you really want to go to Dubbo I would access Hill End from Gilgandra via Mendooran, Dunedoo, &
Gulgong, Mudgee. Come out at Sofala & continue to Carcoar via Bathurst.
Plenty of other options if you wish. cheers...oldbaz.

There are plenty of good free campsites with toilets and fireplaces on the Bridle Track between Bathurst and Hill End. They are on the edge of the river.

Birdcage Reserve on the Murrumbidgee between Hay and Narranderah has plenty of space. There is room to camp close to the toilet block (near the highway) or you can move further away in a large open field. There are also a few spots close to the river. We found it in camps 4. We pulled up for an overnight stay during the school holidays. Only two other vehicles there and we were all well away from one another. Not somewhere I'd go as a destination in itself, but we will probably stay there again when transitting between Sydney and Adelaide.
