Hi
Thinking about taking a flight over Lake Eyre in a few weeks when we get out there. We are only going as far west as
Marree.
Has anyone had any recent experience of the flights or comments ?
I know we may not see much
water- but we want to just see the lake from a different angle.
thanks!

wrightsair are the mob: they have a website with good photos and prices.
I haven't done it but a mate who we met up with at
Coongie Lake did it and really enjoyed it (worth the $ he said).

Spoke to a guy who did a one and a half hour flight out from
Marree about 2 weeks ago - said he saw lots of
water and no birds. Pilot said all the birds had been scared off by planes! Said it was a good flight.

Phil, we thought that planes at less than 500 feet may do that. We had a good look at the
water and saw limited numbers of birds and deserted nests. Must say it wasn't particularly comfortable with seven in a small plane, even for just an hour from
William Creek. You would have to expect evaporation to start to increase soon.

Have a great time, we flew from
William Creek, we wanted to see the northern part of the Lake, that was in May this year, not a whole lot of
water but a fantastic experience, it was a spur of the moment decision and we drove from W.A.We booked a two hour flight. Stayed at the Pub at
Marree, had a rest from our tent, but camped at W/
Creek. It may be wise to book some accommadation ahead, as it was extremly busy at
Marree, flight booking would be wise as
well. We drove out to the Southern end of the North Lake through a station, but alas no
water.

Hi
Thanks everyone for your replies so far.
Shame about the planes scaring all the birds away though.
I have read some older comments on here about doing your research and knowing what you will see prior to going as the pilots are not that informative!
Fore-warned is fore-armed!

I thiink
the pilot may have said with a sky smile. ?????
The birds spend their time on the
water & planes in the air.

"pilots not that informative"
Perhaps it depends on who you get. With the heavy tourist load at present maybe there are some "seasonal" pilots flying, who don't know the area
well. But if you fly with Trevor Wright, the owner and chief pilot of Wrightsair, I can assure you there is no one better to inform you of the local environment.
Bill.

We're going out that way leaving the Central Coast NSW 31/9/09 (not long now) I did inquire about flights to see Lake Eyre and this is the reply I received. There was a follow up email that said that the
Marree Man was had to distingush so they don't fly out there any more BUT anything is done for a PRICE
Hi Anthony,
The plane flights are $250/head and helicopter flights are $495/head. Both flights are approx 1.5 hrs and fly over Lake Eyre and the
Marree Man. Plane flights need a minimum of 4 people to go, and the helicopter require a minimum of 2 people. If you are considering a flight you can secure a place by calling us at the Hotel on 08 8675 8344 and paying by credit card.
Kind regards

i have just come back from 6 days around Lake Eyre with my aircraft. we did a full circumnavigation of the lake, including up to
Birdsville across the bottom of the Simpson and back down over Goyder's
Lagoon to just north of Cowarie, then back up , and right around the Kallakoopah. it would be fair to say that we saw most of what there is to see.
Forget about doing a flight around the bottom end of the lake, or seeing the '
Marree Man'. the best value for money, and to see something that you may never see again , is to get up to the northern end of the lake.
the junction of the 'Diamantina, Kallakoopah and
Macumba' is a great sight. lots of birds,
water and
wildflowers. there are literally millions of acres of
wildflowers, all the way up to
Birdsville. But only where the floodwaters have covered the surrounding country. As there has been no local rain, the distinction between the river flats and desert is obvious. it's all still there waiting to be seen, but get in quick, once the heat starts, it will all die off in a hurry.
From what i could see, the best flights are out of
William Creek with Wrightsair, or check at the
Marree Hotel. Don't go to the
Marree Store.
it's impossible to grasp the magnitude of this flooding anywhere but from the air.
i thoroughly recommend it.

Just interested to know why you have suggested the Hotel and not Maree Store?
Thanks very much

HH.
it's hard to pick the wood from the trees when you arrive in
Marree. who flies where and in what aircraft. the guys who work out of the hotel impressed me, i understand they do trips to the north end. i believe the guys from the store just fly around the bottom end of the north lake.
the other consideration is the distance you have to fly to get to the action. it might be worth thinking about driving up to
William Creek to be closer to the area of interest , and therefore lower cost.
From my point of view. and i have seen the Lake in full flood in the mid 70's, and taken boat trips down the Cooper. the best
views and most memorable are at the top end of the North Lake and onwards up through Goyders
Lagoon to
Birdsville. it seem that only few companies offer this choice.
enjoy,
P-jay

Thanks for your comments and getting back to me!
We had a look at going the extra distance to
William Creek and it unfortunately just adds too much time on to the trip we have planned. We just cant do all of what we want if we head the extra 200km to W
Creek and then back.
I will give the hotel guys a call and see what they have to say about it all as
well
thanks again
