benq, I just came back from Birdsville. There will be others who would know better - my first time there. I went via Camerons Corner, Innaminka and Cordilla Downs.
I was surprised by the number of people on the roads, I would call them roads not tracks - unless they got wet (except the Cordillo Downs road - that was bumpy).
It was warm out that way last week but very warm in Qld in general last week. Don't forget to take lots of 'drinking' water and a broom to get rid of the DUST.
Plot of my journey

I will be doing a similar route ex St George in first week of Oct, may be getting a bit warmer by then but not the humidity of the coast, the roads will be mostly OK, ask locals if not sure of conditions.

"will we be safe?" that depends on you, your car, and your driving etc.

Going on your own, these are well travelled & maintained roads now so you will see other travellers along the way if you do get into strife, DO NOT LEAVE your vehicle if you do & if you still feel unsure, rent a sat phone for added security, dont forget to have plenty of water, food & fuel & a reliable, well maintained vehicle, & MAPS, + basic tools and belts etc. A second spare wheel is something I never go outback without now after a close call a few years back.

If all else fails sit back and relax, drink your extra water and eat your extra food secure in the knowledge I will be a few days behind you, LOL

3 things to remember Preperation, Preperation & Preperation.

Cheers Colin.

It will be school holidays, so there will be a fair number of vehicles around.
Its starting to warm up then - might get temps between 30 and 40 degrees, but nights are nice. Flies are usually a bit keen by then too.

hello benq,
I just got back from all those places about 3 weeks ago and I was on my own. There are enough cars around for help to be along if needed without too much of a wait. The roads are fine if dry. The gravel on the road is pretty rocky on lots of the Birdsville track but is pretty good really. If you are really unlucky you might need 2 spares, it depends on what type of tyres you have. I reckon its always a good idea to carry an extra spare tyre carcass off the rim on the roof (to save weight) in case of extreme bad luck anywhere out there especially if your tyres aren't a common one.

I loved my trip, I hope you have a good one.

Cheers
