Which is the best way?

Cunningham Hwy?

Heifer's Crk to Gatton and Ipswich then north?

Heifer's, Gatton, Esk, Kilcoy?

Not at all familiar with the area but realise I'm in the ranges. Just want the easiest run. Don't mind if it's a bit longer.

cheers.

Traffic wise
Heifer's, Gatton, Esk, Kilcoy, Beerwah is the easier run it avoids all of the traffic snarls caused by Capt Blighs road works.
You will have hills between Gatton and Esk which is quite steep and narrow and downhill and between Kilcoy and Beerwah is steep but a good main hwy.
Rejoin the Bruce hwy at the Landsbough turnoff, go north up the highway to Eumundi and take the road in towards Twantin, follow the signs to the ferry( $6 for a car)
The Rangers station is just before the ferry for camping permits. Over the ferry and then pick which of the 4 beach entrances you want to take.
The beach was in good nice both at high tide and low 2 weeks ago but things can change.
How big is your trailer/caravan?

caravan is 1.9t loaded. Soft roader (Jayco Outback pop-top) I wasn't actually thinking of going up the beach thru Tewantin. I know that area reasonably well and didn't think the van would get thru to Rainbow? I was thinkoing of going thru Gympie but would be open to suggestions.

A friend of mine just spent 5 days parked up on that beach.

Took his Bushtracker and F250 along the beach.

Thanks for that mate - do you reckon you could get out up at Rainbow beach ok?

I'm sure if he can pull one of those around I can manage mine. I suppose the trick is to keep to the low tides but are there any narrow/dodgy spots further north?

2 weeks ago, 2 hrs to 3 hrs after high tide rainbow was not passible.
The entrance onto rainbow beach from leisha track was maybe 2 cars wide where it entered the beach, water was still up to the dunes and a lot of trees where lying in the water. It may be passable at very low tide but I didnt stick around that long to find out, it was blowing an absolute gale.

How about,,

west to Gunnedah, then an easy run up through Narrabri, Moree, Goondiwindi,
then ya can toss a coin whether ya go thru Toowoomba, Crows Nest etc,

or ya can go via Moonie, Dalby, Kingaroy, Gympie... pretty easy goin' this way, and not a lot of traffic congestion.. prob'ly end up doin' it quicker than t'other way;-)

I must confess I'm not familiar w/- the Dalby > Kingaroy section, and it should be noted that this road passes pretty close to the Bunya Mts, so you can expect some 'undulations'.. That said, it's all farming country thru there, so I wouldn't expect anything too steep..

Thru Goomeri, Kilkivan, yeah, 'undulating' country, but I can't think of anything that would be a cause for concern... South of Goomeri there's some half-decent hills, but you can get a run at 'em, so you don't lose much momentum on these:)

We live in Toowoomba & go via Crows Nest, Yarraman etc when we head that way, & there's some steepish windy sections 'round Cooyar - Yarraman, but I've never considered 'em to be any kind of a concern (our CT is pushin' 2t loaded)...

Catch ya later.. Ed C

:)

Should've explained I was trying to avoid the big hills so that rules out Toowoomba.

Steve, I'd go Narrabri, Goondiwindi, Moonie, Dalby, Kingaroy, Murgon, Gympie, then you get onto the Rainbow Beach Road at the Southern end of Gympie.
No serious hills or narrow roads this way.
Dalby to Kingaroy on the Bunya Highway is an easy and pleasant run. Skirts the Bunya Mountains.

Give Toowoomba the miss.

Kilkoy to Beerwah has a long steep climb and a real switchback section between Peachester & Beerwah. I get car-sick just driving through it!

Cheers

Steve,

Last time I went that way I went up through Manilla, Warialda, Texas, Inglewood, Millmerran, Dalby, Kingaroy then down to Gympie.

My memory of the trip was long stretches of fairly flat reasonable quality sealed roads with little or no traffic until I got close to Kingaroy and then the traffic was only moderate to light. We made very good time getting from Millmerran to Rainbow beach in the day including looking for friends in Kingaroy and shopping in Gympie. We did have a bit of a rush in Rainbow beach to make camp and get tea sorted before dark but we put a lot into the day.

Thanks guys - great ideas there.

I fancied stopping at Heifer's creek o/night 'cos we'll have a bit of a late start as I'm doing a job in Tamworth until maybe mid-day

...but my head has been turned and I might go via Goondi, (which I do when I go further north) and maybe try to find a stop around the Bunya Mtns or somewhere near before heading off to Inskip the next morning. I did like the idea of coming out onto the Bruce at Beerwah because we've never seen the Glasshouse Mts close up but it'll keep for another time.

I've been up thru Warialda, Baraba, or Texas and although not as hilly as the New Eng. those roads can be a bit narrow and sometimes one lane. This stuff's nearly as good as going I reckon.
