Hi,

I'm hoping to get out of Sydney and head out and about round outback NSW in a couple of weeks for a week, and as there will be two of us, I figured I'd hire an off-road camper trailer, with the bonus of being able to carry some jerrys of fuel, a water tank, etc.

Looking around though, I'm finding it kind of hard to work out exactly what I can get away with towing, as none of the sites im looking at give an indication of trailer weight. The Jimny specs are 350kg unbraked, 1100kg braked (on the suzuki website); although the owners manual lists it as 450kg braked..., with a towball download of 75kg.

Can anyone give me some rapid pointers on if a camper is going to work in this case?? I've never towed anything, so I'm new to all this, I'd usually just take the swag. I was looking at something like one of these two Site Link

Any help much appreciated,

Rob

Yeah, I could just make him go buy a cheapo tent, and lend him a bag. Was figuring though, without a trailer, we're going to end up with a load of weight in the truck. Kind of appeals that to play in the fun stuff, I can just unhook it and jimny will be ready to go...

Try one of these. Smallest and lightest camper I've seen:

Pod Trailer Camper

A Jimny is pretty small and if you get offroad trying to pull anything too heavy it simply won't pull it.

Someone hires the Pod Campers. if you contact the manufacturer and ask they can point you at the hire mob.

That looks pretty good. I don't think I'd want to drag the trailer too far off road, just as long as it handles some light stuff to get to a site, then set it up and go explore, which is what I'm set up to do best.

Hey Rockman

My mate is traveling Australia now with a Jimny and a fully customised Elite Camper Trailer. Sleeps two. He has his engel in the box on the drawbar. Has built in deep cycle battery with solar panel that goes on the roof of the camper. Has awater tank in the middle - you can see it in the open camper photo. These campers are designed to be towed behind even motorbikes or other smaller cars.

Speak with Jim from Bestoffroad (he is on here)..
www.bestoffroad.net.au

He has designed a camper trailer to be towed by bikes, or light vehicles.

Try these guys.. Trek

Saw them years ago when I had my 16valve 1600 Sierra but never ended getting a trailer for it.

Maybe purchase a 6x4 trailer with canvas cover? I don't know how heavy is but is much cheaper than a camper trailer and then you could you it again for other camping trips? Having extra space, you can throw in a good quality - easy to set up- tent and all your gear. Probably this will pay out the rental.
