Which GPS?????

I know this has probably been covered about a million times before and I have searched, but could someone please point me in the right direction. I need a new GPS but is there one which I can have for running around town and also one for tracks in the bush (TOPO maps)

many thanks

Andrew

Here's 2 to check out, the Nuvi would be ideal with Garmin Topo installed to an SD Card.

1 Nuvi 765

2 EO's SHOP

I will second Doug on that, I have a Nuvi 760 with city navigator and shonkie maps on an sd card. The Garmin Nuvi has been on some pretty rough tracks and has performed really well.

Wow!

The Hema Navigator has certainly come down in price.
$699 from the EO Shop. That's an excellent price to what they were originally released for.

Now you've got me thinking if it's time to upgrade from my PDA.

I won't replace my Tom Tom 720 though. I love it.

Hi Andrew
I personally have Garmin hand help GPS units, as well as a Nuvi 5000. The Garmin Topo Australia maps do not cut the mustard, a fact that Garmin are well aware of and are having a big overhaul in early 2010. Hema are very soon to release their new 5" Navigator, which are top units. Seeing the 2 units run side by side, the Hema has it all in one unit.
As for Garmin, their second release version of Topo Australia will have to be a lot better, we will have to wait and see.

Cheers

Stephen

Does the Hema unit do street navigation also?

BUT the Hema navigator is $900 + and if you buy a Nuvi 250 or 265 and Topo , you are up for about $200 +199.

I just went to the Kimberley and back using mine and although some of the maps are old ( How can this be? Did Hema deliberately sell old maps to Garmin???) and show you off the road eg Donohue and non recognition of the Landsborough highway to Rocky, it was good and had some tiny tracks on it.

The upgraded Hema Navigator is about to come out (if it hasn't already) and the priice has been massively reduced to $699.

Hi Kurd
I was speaking to Rob from Hema yesterday and he said that the new 5" units should hit the market, either late October/early November.

Cheers

Stephen,

Thanks, that puts a different light on the situation. Adele from ExplorOz emailed me that the new batch with additional features would have a new RRP of $699 as of 1st September. The web sites of both ExplorOz and Hema refer to the 4.3 inch model at that price so perhaps there is some confusuion in the camp!

Could it be that they are only reducing the price of the old 4.3 inch model to clear "old" stock before they introduce the 5 inch model? Once the 5 inch model is released we may see the price rocket back to the previous unrealistic (to me anyway) level.

Hi Kurd
I did not ask Rob the price of the new 5" Model, but I would say that is why there is the big price variation, like you say to clear stock of the 4.3" Model to make way for the new 5" units. Like I have said above, seeing the two units working side by side in the Great Victoria Desert, ie the Hema Navigator and my Garmin Nuvi 5000 with Garmin Topo Australia inserted, the Hema unit won hands down, no questions asked at all.

Cheers
