Carawine Gorge
On the
Oakover River, north eastern
Pilbara, Western Australia.
Carawine Gorge is one of those spots that have been
well known and patronised by ‘the locals’ for many years. It is the perfect spot to relax and unwind for a few days.
Sit in the shade of a Red Gum at the waters edge and watch the resident pair of White-breasted Sea-eagles, or catch a Sooty Grunter for dinner. Climb the
hill for a view of
the gorge in the early morning, or cross the river and hike along the
cliff edge in the afternoon.
The pool is a couple of ks long, ideal to explore by canoe. Great swimming spots downstream for kids too.
Position: S21º 28.51’, E121º 01.72’.
Map: HEMA
Pilbara and Coral Coast, HEMA Atlas Edn. 7,page 87, D11.
Getting there: 275km west of
Marble Bar in the NW
Pilbara via the Rippon Hills and Woodie Woodie roads. All but the last 14km is bitumen.
Accessibility: Turn right across the end of the
airstrip a few hundred meters before
the Gorge to avoid the more difficult sections of river gravel further upstream.
No problem for 2WD to within 200m of the river. The first campsites on the rivers edge are OK for many 2WD vehicles with extreme care, but conditions change, so take a good look before driving in. Beyond that, 4WD is required to negotiate the river pebbles.
Facilities: None. Self contained campers only. Take your rubbish out with you.
Fees: None.
Other
places of interest nearby:
Marble Bar,
Marble Bar Pool, and
Comet Mine tours. The Scull Springs Road (un-sealed) is a pretty drive to
Nullagine (fuel is usually cheaper here than in
Marble Bar).
NOTE:
Carawine Gorge is part of Warrawagine Station and is PRIVATE PROPERTY. The station does NOT require that you call them prior to
camping there, but please treat the area with respect.
This (and some pics of ours) was published in a recent "Wanderer" mag.
