Gas struts

I have a camper with a door held up by gas struts. Only problem is they are too weak. They will hold the door up but a slight wind and it drops down to half way and I have already walked into it a couple of times.

My question is - the current struts are 200n - to up size how much more should I go. I found some similar ones but they are 580n - is this too much - like would I nearly break my door when it opens and need two heavy blokes pulling down to shut or is would 580n be alright if only a bit stiff.

And where is the best place to buy struts - like is there a place on eBay or some local shop - Mandurah or Perth. The local auto shops have a very limited supply and insisted they needed a car make and model - even after explaining it was on a camper.

David,

contact the people who make canopies, Rosco's etc. I'm also sure that TJM in O'Connor would know a gas strut supplier. They did a few years back when I spoke to them but I can't remember who it was.

cheers

hi there
if you google
gas struts/western australia the search will come up with several suppliers that you can contact
hope this is a help as they are availuble in varios lengths and pressures not having seen your door makes it hard to suggest a pressure rate but you may find 300 or 400n will do the job
cheers

hi
struts.com.au in the east will help you work out what pressure rated struts you need for your camper door
i'd suggest 350 or 400 should do it but then i haven't seen the door
hope this will help mazcan barry

Hi David

There is a place [that I can't quite remember the name of] in Carlisle on the corner of Briggs and Harris streets that has all sorts and sizes of gas struts .
I got new ones for the work/camper trailer there a couple of years ago , I just took in my old ones and they matched them up with new ones for around $20 each.

Hope this helps

Hi David,

I put new Gas struts on my cub. I put 800n struts on it, Replacing the 750n ones on it.

They are rated by taking a zero of the newtons to give you an approx rating in kg's.

ie 800n = 80kgs

I got mine from a local caravan/smash repair centre

If you don't have any luck locally, there is an online store "ovesco.com.au" selling gas struts. Was looking for some for my camper last night and came across their site.

Gaz.
Mmmmmmmm, now where do we go next?

Try www.uesint.com/index.php they have shops in Malaga and Belmont. They specialise in supplies for motor body builders. You'd be surprised what they have

David,

My advice is to go to a gas strut installer. You should be able to find your nearest one by yellow pages or Google.
There may be nothing wrong with your struts that a bit of extra pressure won't fix.

An installer can test them and replace only if necessary.

Bill.
