Whats wrong with Steve Irwin? How did he suck people in? From what i have seen he has the best zoo in all of Australia. A real, genuine bloke who cared for the well being and conservation of animals. Nothing wrong with that is there? Alot of what he said and did on camera was over the top,(but it was for TV) but at least he got his message out and left his mark on the world. As they say, One man can make a difference, he certainly did. Top Bloke, taken far too soon.

As for the Leyland Brothers, im much too young to know, but i've never heard a bad word about them. I would have to say they were an Aussie Icon though. People who were doing things many years before anyone else even thought of doing it. Pioneers you could say.

Well...... I guess Ron that you're entirely entitled to your own opinion. But with so many people world wide being great followers of both Steve Irwin and the Leylands, I would hazard a guess that your views would be in the minority. Both of these icons lived their lives doing what they loved best, and Steve Irwin not only made a handsome living from it, but he re-invested a great deal back into the Australian wilderness. He put his money where his mouth is!

Sad days when both of these fellow Aussies lost their lives......

My opinion only....

Brian

Hi Kroozer,

I have a mate who's son works at the Australia Zoo and has done for some years. He was lucky enough to meet Steve and assured me that what you saw on TV was what the guy was really like, very passionate about his work and very enthusiastic about life!! What we saw on TV was what he was!

Taken far too soon IMHO.

Cheers

Mike and Mal spent young years in Wallsend NSW and their Dad was a Pom and worked in Real Estate.

I suppose we should berate all pioneers for being stupid especially the ones that lost their lives exploring this Great Country that we all benefit from.

Mike and Mal were screwed by "Which Bank " and that was bad enough they dont need to be screwed further.

They could have been there also but the father if I remember correctly was with Johns & Co and they lived in Thomas Street Wallsend .
The house I believe is now gone due to road widening which is now part of the Newcastle Link to the expressway..

I would say a poor choice of location was the problem and should have been closer to a major population density which would have given them a better chance.
Greed depends on your interpretation of a person having a go.
Maybe they needed "Jack "as small business advisor rather a latent bean counter.

When I was a young fella, Dad drove us past their home (Mike's I think) in Tea Gardens and they even had a jeep parked out the front but it was a later one than in the clip and green with the sticker on the door.

I used to love watching them, Malcolm Douglas and even Alby's World Safaris when they came to the local Civic Centre. I was not keen on Jack Absolom though he used to say some silly stuff like you can pre heat a 2H landcruiser by pouring 1 billy of hot water on it.

The youtube clip just goes to show how technology and OH&S have improved in 30 years - plastic jerry cans are the bees knees now and should you really be winching with your foot on the winch - but a lot in that video is still very relevant.

The Leylands were pioneers - well before "Ask the Leyland Brothers" was on air many of their docos were being shown in churches and surf clubs - long before they appeared on TV.

One of my cousins from Broken Hill worked for the Leylands years ago. I think she was their publicity person or something like that.

I think they fueled my enthusiasm for seeing our country. We traveled a bit when we were young, mostly to the Flinders Ranges and places like that. I used to pretend we were the Leyland Brothers. What we need now is a second generation of Aussie outback explorers to show our kids what it's about.

I was on an early morning flight from Adelaide to Sydney a few years ago. I was sitting next to a younger couple - a Swiss guy and a Japanese girl. All Aussie Adventures was on the inflight TV (QANTAS). I was laughing my whatsname off. After about 20 minutes of the show the guy leans over and says to me "is zis for real?" Up til then Russ had him hook line and sinker. Hilarious.

That pair have a lot to answer for
The first big book I read and reread a hundred times was, "Great Ugly River"
Mike and Mals journey of 1,400 miles in an open boat along the Darling River, from Queensland to Victoria.

That would have been 45 years ago and it kindled a fire for adventure that has yet to die
RIP Mike
