These people never been bush or if they have they must have only camped on sand. There is no way you could dig a hole with a spade that has no edge to drive it into the ground with you foot and a handle not long enough to lever the sod out once you have got the spade into the ground. Sorry, back to the drawing board. Its like those useless flimsy fold up shovels you can buy in camping stores. Try them once and then into the bin.

Richard

Do you mean one of these?

They look like something the cat should use. :-)

Spot on, but I do not take the cat camping so it makes them doubly useless.

I though they were battery powered and microprocessor controlled, so once you pressed the Start Button, it did the rest.

I agreed with this when I first tried it. Yes you are right it will not dig in hard ground but if you are hiking on foot it is much easier to carry this than a large spade. Horses for courses, if you are in the car take a spade, if you are on a bike or walking take an iPood!- I used it last week on an adventure race in a pine forest and it was perfect. I can also assure you it is far from flimsy it is actually really surprisingly strong. The internal holder for paper/matches is also a great idea.

So yes your comments are fine if you only travel in the vehicle and have the space take a spade, but we have tested and used the thing before we decided to add it and now have one in the glove-box of both vehicles.

I also have a fold-up shovel that is far from flimsy.
Maybe I have a good quality ex-army one.

The pick part of it can break up fairly hard ground and the spade is sturdy as well.
The only thing it lacks is reach when used for other purposes and as I now use a porta potti when camping away from conveniences, I don't use the folding one much any more. The long handled shovel I carry is used extensively for a myriad of purposes

As David says, its horses for courses.

Hi Richard,

I have a plastic shovel about the size of this that is always in the car. Comes in very handy, so I think the ipood would be even better, and much more convenient (It is essentially our emergency kit when the big shovel is at home)

Fair go - it's a trowel - not a spade or a shovel ! It's obviously for people moving on foot across country - every gram matters when you are out for x days. That said, you can get more robust units probably, but hell.... these look great :-o)
