If you are looking for a GPS in
Adelaide try Boating Scene at Elizabeth for a good price. He gave me a quote of $870.00 but couldn't deliver for 24 hours. That is for a Magellan Meridan Platinium.
I was going to wait but while in
port Adelaide droppped into Whitworths and they matched his price, but worth seeing him first.

Good price. The cheapest I have seen the MeriPlat (in
Melbourne) is $950 and the dearest is $1,049.
If however you want to purchase from the US you can get it for approx. USD275/ AUD417. Add shipping, GST and customs fees of approx $240 and you can get one for about AUD657. Just need to watch out for the basemap trap.

Magellan GPS's (and Garmin for that matter) from the USA come with a USA basemap. You can use the GPS in Aus with a USA basemap, but it will not give you all the details that you would have by using the Aus basemap. If you install DiscoverAus Streets and Tracks it will give you all the details that you need, however when you zoom out to greater than 700 meters, the basemap takes over (the USA one in this case) and you will see practically nothing.
The basemap can be changed, but officially Magellan in Aus will want $299 to do it for you. The basemap was freely available on the net upto the end of June of this year, but Magellan have clamped down on the sites that hosted them. Unofficially you can still get a copy of the basemap if you search the net hard enough.
