Post 72513 from David might give a bit of an explanation. In the same boat here. Sort of hiccups for 60 seconds to 2 minutes then opens.

Same here. Can open up 6-8 tabs and flick through them and EO is still loading. Spell checking is way to slow so use the google tab. However compared to last week, once loaded it's a bit better but still a bit ordinary, hope he can sort out the dramas.

Hi Number 1
Same here. I usually use Firefox which is still slow and I am now finding Google Chrome is loading the fastest, but nothing like it should. David mentioned the other day that he was having real problems and is trying many things to rectify the problem. I know that David will get to the bottom of it soon.

Cheers

Yep same here

Often it will just stall. Doesn't effect any other sites just ExplorOz. End up going to other sites to have a look around.

When I get shaped that is it. I don't bother until my account comes around to full strength again. I have a afternoon peak and morning off peak account. So when it gets maxed out is usually for the afternoon peak and I am forced to check for 15 mins before going to work. Just not enough time and getting late for work.

Hope David gets it fixed.

Davids been tearing his hair out over this issue. He just loaded some changes last night and has inserted his size 10 in the ring gear of his internet provider for the site to ask them to lift their game.

Heres hoping it all does the trick.

Bonz, I thought you had a choke on responding to you for the time it took. Like waiting for a power company to answer a call 15 minutes after the start of a blackout.

I think David needs a bigger than size 10 if it is a server problem. I get quicker videos from Youknowwho. David must have a head like mine by now.

I'm in Melbourne on 1500/256 ADSL and my laptop runs via a wireless network with anything up to 6 machines running at any one time.

Stephen I posted this the other day to Gone Bush's thread on this matter.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Keeping Flash Player up to date I find does make a significant difference to not just this site but so many others also as it is quite common for so many sites to have extensive Flash Player animation of some sort.

I keep reading the issues and whilst I'm certainly not an expert in these things keep wondering how up to date people are with the whole range of software that they use on their machines including Windows updates.

People tune and service their cars but seem to either not realise the need or neglect to tune their computers with software updates for the respective software they are using and clean out the machines memory/cache and registry from time to time, it all helps to keep the system in tune.

I also use all MS software, XP Professional, IE 8 and Outlook Express etc all software commonly used by industry as a whole and all work very well for me, never needed a reason to use Fire fox or Chrome etc or the other obscure minority branded software products that others use because they claim they have hassles with MS products.

I seem to have very little problems in terms of site speeds and hangups etc compared to many who post complaints on here I just wonder if my comments above are part of the difference??

The last week or so has been the exception and the site certainly has had some problems which David is working on.

David maybe a site reminder when people first log on or access the site that reminds them the site operates best with the latest version of Flash Player etc and a link to the FP download site would help people overcome some issues??

Just my thoughts on the matter :-)

Just to add one more bit of info.
I opened this thread in less than 2 seconds.
I hit the follow up button and the Enter Your Follow Up page opened almost instantly.
I copy and pasted from the other thread and wrote the small additions and hit submit and it was up and the page refreshed with my response displayed in about 3 seconds.

The site seems as fast as I have seen it for quite sometime.

To my knowledge so many of the other sites that EO is compared to such as Overlander etc are so much smaller in both physical site size and the volume of users at anyone time, they also lack the extensive data feeds from outside agencies such as the BOM etc to name but one and any one of these outside feeds can cause problems for the site if they are not behaving.

Then you add the people buying from the shop, uploading blogs reading and uploading to the the forum, looking at the Trader probably others who are stealing page content for what reason I don't know??, those who are probably trying to hack the site just to be smart etc etc all contribute to the hassles and difficulties of operating the site.
Its a highly technical web achievement that can be adversely influenced by so many of these factors.
Lets then add the host servers that David is using plus the reliance on various ISP servers such as Bigpond, Optus etc etc that we all use to access the site its a bloody wonder it all works as well is it does 95 percent of the time.
I should also add the problems that then occur with individual computers owned by everyone of us being $hits from time to time and we all blame it on the site.

Can it be better??, yes of course it can and from what I see David and the team work pretty bloody hard to produce the very best site experience they can, they now have no choice in this as it how David and Michelle feed their family these days so it must work and work well.
I have no doubt he is as frustrated by the issues that are occurring as anyone probably more so as I mentioned above he has to make it work so it can pay or go hungry.

As a start maybe those who are still suffering problems need to clean out their cache and make sure they are running the latest versions of Flash Player etc as it can all help.

Pretty well sums it up John, I leave automatic updates on all the time with the option for me to accept or reject and decide when to install.

I use Firefox 90% of the time and have few problems, I also run five or six other broiwsers, IE8, Opera, Safari and more recently Chrome so I can test my websites for speed and efficiency issues. I have used many of those also to get on EO without any hassles.

That maybe because as I say above the other sites are not as big, used as heavily or as dependent on outside feeds and interactive abilities??

This site is fairly unique in its size and shape compared to most others I visit on a such a regular basis so it may show issues and conflicts more readily than other sites??

Incidentally the site seems to be running very well again this morning, very quick response on all pages I have looked at or posted to.

# 1 I use Avast Home protection and Firefox. I clean out my computer on a regular basis and do not seem to have the issues on other sites.

I do have issues with outlook from time to time though and it seems to play up at the same time I have trouble with EO. Maybe a connection here somewhere?

The answer to all of this may not be with the site.

When i was working troubleshooting computers I found that people run all sorts of programs on their computers.

Lots of these run fine on their own but dislike some of the other stuff that is also on there.
This can cause your computer to run slow.

Check what is in your startup and turn everything off you dont actually need to auto start when you turn ion.

Clear your temp internet files,
Do a registry clean,
Clean out unwanted emails
Have seen a machine with 2000 on it and he wondered why Outlook Express was slow

Some of these probably wont be the cause but may help

If all else fails do a reinstall on the computer.

If you have two machines set one up with a minimal setup and try it

Cheers

Agree Graham thats basically of what I was suggesting in my replies above.

I often wonder how the minority branded and obscure software is possibly affecting or conflicting with other software services, it could be issues with the respective Anti Virus software that some people use, David has said before that the Computer Associates Anti Virus stuff causes issues, I used to run Norton AV many years ago and it was rubbish caused all sorts of problems all the time now on this LAN I use Trend Micro and no problems at all very good stuff.
Another business I'm involved with uses Symantec Corporate Edition AV on its LAN and it also works very well. I had a hard time figuring that one out as Symantec are the owners of Norton so you would think the two versions of their software would behave the same but it doesn't.

Or maybe Flash Player does not like someones version of FF or Chrome etc??
It could also be issues with the ISP that people use.

So many points of influence that go together to make it all work and if one point falls down then it can go to $hit.

Strange you have trouble with Nortons

I have run it for 6 years and apart from having to turn it off when setting up a network I have no trouble with it.

I actually use Internet Security now and its OK.

Have tried some of the FREE virus checkers and reckon thats about what they are worth.

I put one one either Avast or AVG and had to format the drive to get rid of it

Horrible stuff.

I used to try all these little Apps of the net but found them to cause more trouble than they are worth.

Strangely some threads do come up Ok and others dont.

Could it be some of the rubbish in them clogging them up (tongue in cheek for the slow or sensitive ones)

Cheers

I have CA and have had it for years (subscription) and had never had probelms like this...again this site only and it was like this before I updated CA
(did that programe update several months back and it wiped out all my keygens....i didnt think to stop it scanning that folder......hahaha)

But anyway
I did notice that it wont let me set up a 2am scan ...it always wants to do it at 7am the first time slot i put in...cant change it now....
and email scanner is off...cant get it to come on.....i have had enough of talking to overseas call centres just of late (a telstra issue) and am reluctant of calling them for assistance.

Trend Micro you say?.....mmm time for a change of antivirus software i think?

Richard it certainly sounds like you are fighting a battle on your own machine.

Maybe its time for a format and fresh reload of all your software??
If you don't have control of your AV then you may already have a virus or two thats doing the job for you??

Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't.

I can often wait for several minutes waiting for the site to 'open'.

Other time, instantaneous.

At times appears that the server can't handle all the demand for access.

I also have had problems opening threads for some time.

This thread opened no problems.

Thread 72578 just will not open, the tab comes up and it hangs. I could leave it all night and it will not open. Regular occurrence with quite a few threads.

Have not read the other thread at this stage.

I read this thread yesterday and thought "poor bugga's" they must have a computer problem (virus etc) ?

BUT...
this morning I attempted to open the forum direct from the 'short-cut' on the 'desktop' that I have allways used and it 'timed out' and a white screen come up telling me to check this an that bla bla bla

So I closed the window, with-out doing what it said and reclicked the same 'short-cut' again and it opened perfectly, as if there was never a problem, so it may be a problem not in my computer (as I said - 'maybe' )

I dislike 'Spell Check' as it most often will not work (for me)

The above post took in excess of FOUR (4) minutes to load
before you ask, yes, I timed it when I saw it was not going to happen immediately so it may have been as high as 6 minutes.

I did noticed the message: "waiting for: www.exploroz etc" down on the lower area of the screen.

The "Spell Check" did not finish but gave this message coppied below:

Slow - very slow! Very frustrating as I suspect this newly [for me] discovered site is full of amazing information but I keep losing patience.

Tried in my laptop at home [adsl2], on my Telstra turbo card, in the Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth Qantas lounges on my laptop and then on the desktops in the lounges and always with the same frustrating slow responces.

I hope this will be addressed soon as it must be driving visitors away from the site affecting potential revenue etc.

Looking forward to the fix!

Try updating you Flash Player to the latest??
That seems to help most people.

Thanks John - seems to have had a positive effect.

Hopefully that will solve the problem longer term. I do not understand just what Flash Player does and why I needed to manually update it but who cares if it works.

Thanks again.

I'm no expert and fully stand to be corrected but from what I can gather the issue seems to be related to the live feeds from outside servers that run the various adverts on the site???
These adverts I believe along with a number of other site functions require Adobe Flash Player to run properly, early versions of FP seem to exacerbate the other live feed problems??

Its a complex site that relies on so many outside feeds which so many other sites do not have and when things are not all connecting properly then $hit happens.
95% of the time the site is brilliant every so often its a bit frustrating.

Its interesting that some seem to have more issues than others and its also seems to be related to location??
The guys in WA seem to have more problems than those of us in Melbourne??

No doubt that having your machine as fully up to date with all your respective versions of software is a help with the current issues.
