Hi all,
I'm looking into converting my '99 GU patrol to a dual cab ute, and can't seem to find any
places that do it in
Perth. I know TL engineering used to do this sort of thing but have been told they have closed down.
I've done a google search and searched the archives of this fine
forum and can't find any in W.A.
I know Roachie has a dual cab Patrol - so if your watching, any advice mate?
I don't want to extend the wheel base or move the rear diff - just a straight cut off and put a small tray top on ( longest I can fit without moving diff ). I'm not any where near smart enough to take an angle grinder and welder to it myself, so if any one can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.
Any idea what sort of cost I would be looking at would also be helpful?
Thanks in advance, Keith

I have a mate had his TD Landcruiser wagon cut and extended and turned into a spacecab trayback to carry a slide on camper in
Perth.
I will try to find out who did it but not cheap.
I know Unicorn body builders used to do them.
cheers

Thanks mate, I'll try and look up unicorn body builders.
The not cheap part doesn't suprise me that much but hoping to get out of it for under 8k, any more than that and it will become unviable.

Hi Keith
I investigated doing the same thing with my 2005 Patrol with Creative Conversions in
Brisbane (sorry son't know anybody in WA). But, this will give you an idea of the costs involved. $15,000 for dual cab ute.
I'm like you. Too scared to take a cutting wheel to a perfectly good vehicle.
FYI, I already have an old Sahara ('84) that has been cut n shut. Check out my pictures. Was/am/maybe/maybe not selling it. Too expensive to replace in the same configuration. LOL

$15k is for an extended conversion. More like $10k for a cab only job.
Well at least it is on a cruiser.

You are correct. I was talking to them about extended Dual Cab with GVM upgrade. $9,950 for Dual Cab only. $13,950 to include extention.

When its being done, can I suggest you get the chassis reinforced in the usual
places they bend and if you have rear coil springs get the towers strengthened.
And when you load the vehicle, keep the heavy stuff as far forward as possible.
Cheers

You should expect $15000 with a tray supplied Al or steel. I know a guy in Vic who has done many cruisers and a couple patrols and thats what his charges are.

I know him too.
His work is of such a standard that the finished product looks like it came out of the factory that way.
Al Grierson, Darkside Conversions. An outstanding Engineer.

Thanks every one,
Its starting to sound like an expensive proposition but I will look into the
places you have suggested. Thanks also the advice with strengthening the chassis / coil towers. I havn't had any problems so far but upgrading to a van with 300kg ball weight soon, so I will be doing that regardless of the conversion.
Thanks again, Keith

Done my '02 Patrol by Specialised Vehicles in
Sydney. Check the rig pics.
No chassis extension saves heaps of $$, at least $10K but depends what you want. I did a 600mm extension and ended up with a 2.1 tray which is a good size.
I'm into my 3rd year since the stretch and have done
Cape York (at 3500 GVM)with no issues related to the conversion (blew an an airbag though, another story).
What you may not know is that even after my 600mm stretch (with Alloy tray) the vehicle was lighter than what is was as a wagon by about 100KG and a lot of the weght balance moved forward. I had to change the front springs from HD prgressive to HD linear (both Kings) and wind up the Koni's. I went from running 32 PSI in the front BFG's to 42 (unladen) for the same contact patch.
