Hi there,
I have traveled around australia for a year with a dog in 1996.
Also went up
cape york for 4 months with my dog in 2000.
I now also always try to take my new dog on short holidays.
I live on the sunshine coast now.
We returned last week from 10 days in the whitsundays where we were allowed to take our dog to
dingo beach units and pub. The rule is you can't take them inside the unit though. It's a magic spot right on the beach, I left my tinnie in the water and went out each day fishing and snorkelling.
Also stayed in a house at Teewah beach escapes which allows dogs 2 months ago.
Overall my dog is so important she comes with me full stop.
Motels usually let a dog sleep in your car outside the unit.
You can rent houses short term which allow dogs.
I usually planned to move between spots where my dog could stay. eg the deer park at Imbil, or a
rest area, or caravan park at Cania george etc.
The books as you know tell you a lot.
Bush camping with dogs and holidaying with dogs are good.
When you get to the outback it's a lot easier. You can
camp out. We even asked some property ownsers if we could
camp on their land, and they always said yes, mind you we were two females and didn't look like axe murderers.
Aboriginal settlements are great beacause they don't have any problem with dogs, but you have to avoid some of their mangy aggressive dogs.
Driving through national parks is unavoidable sometimes but as long as the dog doesn't get out of the car it's ok. After all they are public roads.
Australia is over regulated with anti dog rules, but there are always options and it is
well worth it.
We even slep in our car in the streets of Broom WA because no Caravan parks there allowed dogs.
Broome has tickets on itself, but it has a lot of problems.
Some great spots I can tell you locally are - 1.
Inskip point 2. flinders beach Stradbroke island.
If you want a touching account of how much my last dog meant to me go to u-tube and type in "my dog died on wednesday" the old kelpie passed on 3 weeks ago.
best of luck
Ros
