Thinking about importing a couple of Fords

I own an F350 with 6.8 V10 and a F250 6.0 V8 Diesel in the USA and am thinking about importing them to OZ. I've owned both for a couple of years so I won't have any import duty. (I hope)

Can anyone recommend a conversion centre preferably in Sydney or Brisbane.

I know the place in Gympie does GM cars and trucks and not too sure if they do Fords.

BTW I'm an Aussie who splits time between San Diego and Childers.

The reason they dont import new ones is because the emissions dont pass the test. I wonder if you might strike a problem with the regulations too. The year of manufacture may count for something because we see a lot of old imports from the US.

The price of the 250 diesals here is over the top for what they are. Only because you cant buy a new one.

This info I got from a friend in Qld who has one he bought a few years ago and can sell it for more than he paid back then. I expect he is right.

Meantime i would check with regulations before I start bringing stuff in.

Actually, it's not the reason Ford stopped bringing them to Australia. It was that they couldn't get them anymore. The 7.3 was stopped because it had already ended production 2 years before stocks ran out in Australia. Navistar stopped building that engine. Australian emissions is something like Euro4, Euro5 is tougher again, and US EPA emissions standards from 2010 are much tougher than Euro5, especially in California. The 2010 F-series 6.2L V8 petrol and 6.7L V8 PowerStroke diesel will easily meet EPA 2010 emissions standards.

Ford just needs to develop these things for RHD.

Register of Specialist and Enthusiast Vehicles

The Minister for Transport and Regional Services has entered the following vehicles on the Register of Specialist and Enthusiast Vehicles pursuant to section 21 of the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989 and regulation 23 of the Motor Vehicle Standards Regulations 1989 (the regulations).

Each entry has been made according to the eligibility criteria as given in regulation 24 of the regulations.

For an entry to apply to a particular vehicle you wish to import, the vehicle must:

· be of the Make, Model, Model Code and Vehicle Category specified in Schedule 1 of the entry; or

· be of an alternative Make and/or Model than specified but determined by the Administrator of Vehicle Standards to be of the same design as described in Schedule 2 of the entry; and

· have a Build Date within the specified range, where given in Schedule 1 of the entry; and

· meet all conditions or restrictions specified in Schedule 2 of the entry; and

· have the same vehicle features as those that met the criteria as detailed in Reasons for Decision.

The reasons for the eligibility of the Make/Model of vehicle are specified in Reasons for Decision, attached to the entry.

Where a vehicle that has been granted an import approval is found not to meet the details or conditions of the Register entry applicable at the time of entry, the Administrator may revoke the import approval and determine that the vehicle be exported or destroyed at the importer’s cost.

The fact that a vehicle is included on the Register of Specialist and Enthusiast Vehicles does not guarantee it will be able to gain approval to be plated. A vehicle may not be able to satisfy specific ADR requirements even though it meets the requirements set out for eligibility on the Register.

Where a vehicle does not match an entry exactly as detailed, or cannot meet a condition or restriction on an entry, a new Register decision can be sought. An application for eligibility is to be submitted to the Administrator. Application forms are available on this website.

From time to time an entry’s status, details, or conditions may change. It is in your interest to regularly check the Register for up to date information. You may download and view an entry by double clicking on an entry number in the Index of the Register.

An entry on this Register, for a vehicle, is likely to be affected when an Identification Plate Approval is granted for supply of the vehicle to the Australian market under full volume procedures. Only those vehicles with a build date prior to the date of first supply in full volume will remain as eligible under the Register - the last permitted build date for eligible vehicles will be shown as ‘Last Build Date’ on the entry.

Entries on the Register are varied to exclude all vehicles manufactured prior to 01 January 1989.

Entries on the Register cover all vehicle models assessed as eligible for entry on the Register of Specialist and Enthusiast Vehicles. Vehicle models that have been assessed as ineligible are not included on the Register but are listed in a Table of Not Eligible Vehicle Models.

Thanks for the information but i find it pretty had to comprehend it.

Seems as though the f250 and F350 are not eligible at all, is this because Ford sells them (did sell them) directly in Australia

It lists the Ford Excursion but then says it doesn't comply with the motors it came with.

I just don't get it.

Yes it needs to be read a few times to make sense. But my understanding is that it does not matter anymore how long you have owned the vehicle (years ago if you owned it overseas more than 15 months you could bring it in).
Now it has to be listed on the vehicle register (link above) and have been manufactured within the dates specified on the register. If its not on the register there is still hope . You can apply to the Administrator that your vehicle is:

be of an alternative Make and/or Model than specified but determined by the Administrator of Vehicle Standards to be of the same design as described in Schedule 2 of the entry;

Note that even if you bring it in legally it still has to comply with ADR. That is a separate hurdle to jump.

I looked at it some time ago and gave up - it all seems too hard.

hi , I have imported several vehicles from the USA and Japan and last time i checked they only have to be built before Jan 1 1989 or you have owned AND used it for more than 12 months. Check with a local vehicle engineer in your area as to weather your cars compile to our ADRs or check with any left to right convertors. Or ring the office relevent in Canberra on 1800815272. In WA there is " F Trucks " in Welshpool and they will help you with info. You could also ring Superformance in QLD on 0734887800. Also in your state you may be able to leave it LHD depends on your state laws. In WA i think it is the car must be over 15 years old.

there is a plce in melbourne ,they did most of the conversions for ford in oz , cant remember who , the name is at work , they still sell the f150 off there website.

VDC in Melbourne will sell you a new F series. I have bought two new F350's there. One in 97 and another a couple of months ago. I believe they are the only company that has ADR compliance to convert them. They do a good conversion.

Unaccompanied Personal Effects DO NOT include motor vehicles, motor vehicle parts and commercial goods .. Quote from Customs Website -

Duty of 5% and 10% GST will apply to your vehicles...unless they are over 30 years old .. and you must get Vehicle Import Permits before shipping them to OZ...
