Fuel consumption. An apology

I have just returned from a Simpson Desert crossing as part of the Simpson Desert Bike Challenge. A few months ago I stated in a thread discussing fuel consumption that I got slightly better than 9.00 l per hundred k on the crossing last year and thought this was because we were just crawling along. I was pretty amazed at the figure at the time, but there it was. several forumites expressed scepticism at my figures, but I was certain I had been accurate, even though amazed myself.
So this year I checked again. I wasn't driving nearly as carefully this trip (I had an extra jerry aboard.) Even allowing for this, clearly I got last year's figures wrong somehow as this year I got just on 19l per 100k.
Sorry folks. (1985 LC diesel with turbo).

Lucky you didn't use last years consumption figures to work out how much to take this year year :-))
On a normal crossing many diesels report getting the same consumption figures in the desert as they do on the highway, mainly due to the relatively slow speed. 13 to 16 litres per 100 is pretty usual. Travelling late as you have this year it's not surprising with the soft dry sand that you used more. Many groups I've spoken to have found the crossing to be as difficult as it gets, with a couple of cars rolling into Oodnadatta on fumes.
Thanks for the update.
Cheers Craig..................

On the other hand, if my consumption deteriorates at the same rate, you will easily be in front next year. We needed to carry an awful lot of water, nearly 200 litres because the bike riders go through vast quantities of the stuff. But that was the same last year. This and all the extra bike stuff we have to carry up on the roof would raise the fuel consumption quite a bit, but again, last year would have been the same.
I think thr dunes were bigger and softer this year. We also came via Big Red instead of the inside track as that was closed due to flooding. I've never seen the Simpson looking so green. And most amazing of all, almost no flies. (Some people have told me they are prepared to believe my lasy years fuel consumption claim but they wont swallow the "almost no flies".)

THats a lot of water - must remember that if we are support crew, friends of ours were to do that ride this year , but have had to put it off to next year.

Also found the same with the flies - vey few and very green.

As it turned out, this year was much cooler than last year and we were about 60 litres too much. It's hard to estimate water for this trip with the Bike race. If you are doing it next year, contact me as I have plenty of info that you might find useful.
