It looks like I need a deserts pass even if I only want to visit coongie lakes on the way further south to Flinders etc. Though the site doesn't say if I need the pass to just drive in and visit.

Does anyone know if I need both the desert park pass and vehicle entry pass if I want to just visit? I could stay in Innaminka and just drive out and back in the one day-if possible that is. Just seems pretty expensive to spend over $120 plus camping fees to stop one or two nights.

Last time I was out there we did a day trip Innaminka to Coongie and it was a good day out.

I did not have a Desert Parks Pass because I did not think I needed it. Maybe I did, too late now.

You could always jsut go to Innaminka and check at the Ranger station or trading post when you get there.

You do need a pass but they are available for whatever number of days visits you want from the Innaminka Trading Post. Much cheaper than the annual pass iof you only need a few days. You can easily drive out and back in a day but it would be a pity to miss the sunrise and sunset. The pass is also required for the Montecollina Bore - a good overnight spot on the way to the Flinders Ranges.

Thanks for that, the NP's site was a bit obscure on whether or not it was deserts park pass plus the vehicle entry. So it looks like just the vehicle pass and camping fees.

Thanks also for the tip in Montecollian Bore, any others you can pass on?????

Either heading towards Flinders from Innaminka or via Sturt's NP.

We did the same trip about 2 weeks ago.
We had a desert parks pass, and figure it was worth the money anyway as it hopefully goes to upkeep of that whole area..
We did an overnight out to the Lakes. In a day, it can be a long drive if the roads are wet- which they were for us. It took us 2.5 hours to get to Coongie from Innaminka, so Im glad we stayed the night. It is very peaceful out there and we only saw one other camper. On the way out there is a few things to look out and you can really spend time around the lake.
Montecollina bore is pretty and a good stop point. However, we did the trip from Innaminka and camped at Lyndhurst for the night. It was an ok trip as the road is so good and lots of nice scenery.
The road is gets a bit rough before Lyndhurst.
We also stayed at Flinders Ranges in Arkaroola and had a fantastic time.
enjoy!

Enjoy all the flies-not.

forgot to add we didnt pay for camping fees at Coongie Lakes- or Innaminka as long as you are not on the Town Common( then you pay $5). You also wont pay at the bore.

We were in Innamincka in July. We stayed on the town common for 4 nights at $5/night. You also need a pass - $7 for as long as you are in the area (not per day/night) This pass allows you to travel to Coongie and anywhere else on the mud map that they give you - but, if you want to camp anywhere else other than the town common it is $15/n. All of the passes can be bought at the Trading Post and rangers do check to see if you have a pass.

We didn't camp overnight at Coongie but did a day trip instead. Long day but we enjoyed what we did this time around. Next time we may stay overnight at the Lakes.

As other posters have advised you need to pay to camp at Coongie only for the time you are there and don't need the full parks pass.

The area is very scenic and worth a visit, however, if your not into walking, fly swatting, bird watching, or canoeing there is very little else to do.
The road is not well maintained and it's a reasonable but bumpy 2+ hours drive. At Coongie there is no power boating (thankfully), but also no fishing, no yabbying, and worst of allcamp fires are not allowed. It can get dam cold at night.
Oh, and as I remember no fresh drinking water so make sure you have enough for self and car.

There is a lot of misinformation given above IMO.

You do not need a Desert Pass to travel to Innamincka, but there is an honesty box present and a fee payable for Camping at the Town Common.

If you are visiting anywhere in the Innamincka Regional Reserve, including Coongie Lakes, or any of the water holes along the Cooper Creek you require to a Deserts Pass or pay a daily fee.
