Hello All,
I live in the Blue Mountains and I have been all over Oz but had never been to Newnes. It was raining this weekend and my car needed a mud bath, so I decided to check it out, what with it being so close and all. I went via
Zig Zag,
Lost City and Blackfellows Hand Track. I must say that I was really impressed with the drive through the
Wolgan Valley and Newnes itself. To me it was a little piece of paradise, great
views,
camping area and good bush walks available.
Anyone living in
Sydney who hasn't checked it out really should. I recommend it.
Cheers,
Mike

Hi Mike,
Yep couldn't agree more, I've been going there since the late 70s.
Shame that the pub lost it's licence, but still a very place indeed!

Mike , I could not tell from your post , but are there 4wd tracks of reasonable difficulty or is it scenic drive etc ?

Hi Robin,
The tracks around Newnes are mostly scenic drives, but some do require at least a soft 4wd.
The Blackfellows hand trail can be pretty boggy after rain, the track out to the
glow worm tunnel is sandy in sections, the Spanish steps track (hard 4wd) was closed by a
gate the last time that we were there & the track out to
the Lost city was closed by boulders!
There are some other tracks in the area which can be difficult in
places, but Newnes itself is in Wollemi Ntnl
park, so no off track driving is allowed.

I agree. The main track is easy but around
Lost City and Blackfellows hand there are quite a few side tracks and some of them get really hairy especially if wet. Once onto the main road through
Wolgan Valley, its just a really pleasant scenic drive along a recently graded gravel road.

A key is obtainable for the Spanish Steps if you are a group.. That is what I remember On Patrol and Toni driver Colin saying when he organised a day gathering out at Newnes for when I was visiting from Qld in August. He is travelling at the moment and back at the end of October.. maybe member message him and he will certainly have more details for you.
