G'day all. Just wondering if anybody out there has had a 1hz piston fail.I have a 1998 100series with after market turbo and intercooler with 240000klms on the clock that went off with a bang (thought i had a ZD30 under the bonnet for a minute !). Took the head off today to find number 6 piston split accross the top and the
bore buggered.Thinking of replacing it with a 1hd-t or 1hd-ft,has anyone done this and any tips please.

Bill,
I have been doing a heap of research on turbo charging a 105 series with 1HZ. There are numerous reports of failures in these engines, particularly when the turbo is wound up with excess boost, overfuelling and advanced timing, all to create greater power in an engine that was never designed for this.

LCOOL
forum is also a great place for advice on the Toyotas.

while I dont know about "numerous failures", Im certain that doing all Mark has mentioned puts a 1HZ in danger of this.
Uncountable numbers of 1HZ's have been turbo'ed (3L Hilux's also)
Both these motors are the same indirect injection setup.
Boosting over about 8or9 psi is something I wouldnt do. Most common I think is a crack between precombustion chamber and exhaust valve followed by piston failure.

Would end up with an awesome vehicle too.
There's a posts on LCOOL

For any Landcruiser owner, LCOOL is worth signing up to...heaps of good knowledge on that
forum.
Anyway, the short and curly's of it, look these guys up:

There is another post on LCOOL about a guy putting one of the new V8TD Toyota motors into a 105 series (out of a tray back). Nice rig and he surprisingly managed to do it with very little expense.

Yep, this is one of the most common failures with turboed 1HZs. Usually seems to be a result of excessive boost, but not always. This is also the reason I would personally never turbo my 1HZ. The not designed to run with turbos and reliability is just never there.
As others have said, LCOOL is the place for conversion info. Can definitely be done with any of the 1HD engine variants (1HD-T, 1HD-FT, 1HD-FTE). Obviously the newer models are better, but it's not a cheap exercise, so your budget will probably make the decision for you. Get over to LCOOL and have a read.
