Just finished the treck from Kalgoolie to cocklbiddy via Rawlina and Haig. The road from Haig to Cocklbiddy is only 120 kms but pretty rocky and was filthy wet two weeks ago . Took us 6 hours .Lots to see, camels,100's of roos ,eagles also. The road would be ok when dry. 5 sets of gates to open.Well worth the effort.

Yep about what we did it in in late july, av 20kph, bloody sick of limestone outcrops by the time we reached the highway. At least we could straddle a lot of them where most vehicles would hit the diffs.
Was told last night by a friend that the track down the fence line from Rawlinna is what the locals use, not the track to Arrabiddy (sp) or the haigh track.

Yes Peter, I believe you at least had the tracks of the mighty Nissan Pootrol to follow. We found the track down from Haig, although rocky, not as laborious as the last stretches of the Connie Sue down to Rawlinna. As Eagle outlined, there was a heap of wildlife and I'd imagine it would be a whole lot greener now than it was in July. The small grass filled pans were most interesting. Would make great camp spots in better weather.

Cheers Mick

POO trol is right, that would be the one that is on 1 1/2 motors and numerous other major parts and has since been traded on a new Tojo ;-)))

Eagle, the property owner had no problem with you using the track in the wet?

Can't answer your question.

but having traveled it and many other tracks crossing the Nullarbor, there is not much dirt out there, ever two feet there is a limestone block, you would have to stay away from water hole and sink hole, but otherwise it would be OK.

My impression after speaking with the owner at the Rawlina end was that the track to Cocklbiddy was on private property & permission was required. He rang through to the station at the other end to let them know we were coming. He allowed us to take the route as it had dryed out just enough when we arrived.
Cheers Craig..........

Yes Craig

Different track, the Cocklebiddy Rawlinna Road which runs through Rawlinna and Arubiddy stations, thats another story.

There is a sign on the gate at Rawlinna with the ghost busters emblem on it with one over a human. you are requested to call and ask if it is OK to travel the road, which I have in the past, but not when it was wet, the only condition I had put on us was if mustering stop. do not travel until told..

Regards

Richard

The Hema map wrongly says the Rawlinna-Cocklebiddy road is a private track. We have travelled it a couple of times in the recent past and advice from both Arubiddy Station and Cocklebiddy was that it is a public road.

I must say I don't know why others on this site are avoiding it - its a good drive.

Phil

We didn't avoid it we couldn't fined it... The gate was what we should have taken. this was back in 2004 Robyn miss calculated on K's to Rawlinna and we got there on dusk, saw a nice big road hearing off south to the right (we came from Kal) so we had a look around, had a walk, had tea, feed the dog, and started to head south, only to end up in the muster yards.. LOL.

We should have stayed there, the GPS plot looks like a birds nest.. trying to find a way out..

Got some info of some stoned Railway works (none locals) that the Haig road, I fools we did it at night, it wasn't that bad, slept at Cocklebiddy RH 3.00 am..

one day we will get to see them both.. :-)

Hema map wrong.... I brought the new GDT 5th edition CD the other day. and it showed Rawlinna-Cocklebiddy road sealed, also the French Line, Rig Road and heaps more.

Had to make a phone call to Hema, and let them know, they where all pulled right then, my money was back in my bank before I got an E-mail to tell me..LOL

Oh well have to what for the new ones, as there is some good up dates.

anyone tried the track from lake boondaroo to balladonia? i was camped at boondaroo a few years back and a couple of blokes in a troopy rocked up saying they were heading to the Rawlinna muster and had cut up from Balladonia.
lake Boondaroo is probabally nearly dry now - it has filled twice now in an estimated 200 years - 1975 and 1995. The lake was still big but only about 1/4 full in 2004 when i visited still evaporating from 9 years ago.

Drove north from Cocklbiddy to Rawlina & thence the Connie Sue in June 2008. It was dry, very windy and a good track. Made the error on reaching Rawlina Station fenceline and proceeded through the gate instead of turning East & following the fence. Just on dusk entered the station homestead and asked directions and directed (without hassles) between the bunk house and homestead & out the other side to the railway road. We didn't notice any signage at the fenceline.
