Duane,
You will need to organize a inspection at a licensed vehicle tester. Similar to a RWC in vic. Once you have the inspection signed off, take it down to licensing, pay the money they ask, put the new plates on and send the old ones back to vic.

yep, what Matt said. Its about $36 (off memory) for the inspection then transfer and rego - probably a few hundred all up. biggest thing is getting in for an inspection and getting the isnpectors to lose the nazi attitude! (the old bloke at kelmscott is a decent chap)

When I bought my last van, a Supreme, it was newly registered in Victoria, and I drove over to pick it up from the factory in
Melbourne.
They posted all the rego documents to my WA address the following year and even the new rego sticker, all I had to do was Bpay it to be legal.
You can change over to WA rego by having the inspection and paying the fee's etc. but why bother for a caravan?
I traded the van with still with the Vic. rego 18 months later.
Both rego's have 3rd party insurance and it is legal as I checked up on it.
My new van is WA registered and costs $115 here, the equivalent Vic cost is $35!

When I purchased my new van from a
Melbourne Manufacturer it was supplied to me with a"Victorian Unregistered Vehicle Permit".
This allowed me to tow the vehicle back to
Sydney by the shortest practical route.
There are no number/license plates involved.
On arrival in your home state just go through the normal process to register.

For interstate change over you go direct to the Department for Planning and
Infrastructure ( Department of Transport is the Western Australian State Department which leads creative solutions for transport )Inspection station, not to an Authorised inspection station (unless things have changed since 2006)
You do not send the Vic plates back, they do,
RTA is NSW, not WA
Bringing an interstate vehicle to Western Australia

I traded a QLD registered caravan in
Geraldton on Sept 2nd.
Heres what I did.
Took plates in to the place with the pompous name and handed them in and got a receipt.
Sent that back to QLD and got 10 months refund.
Registered the van in my name in WA NO INSPECTION NEEDED.
was told by assistant to use van
park as address.
Went up to dealers and signed the transfer papers and all over red rover.
Registered the new van in my name and at the van
park as I will be back in
QLD within 12 months so can transfer it over then.
Could have sold it unregistered but then it would have had to have an inspection
So did the above as this served two purposes
A it meant the dealer didnt have to take it for inspection to reregister it.
B It meant than any discrepancies (if any) would not be my responsibility later.
Dealer was happy He suggested it
Cost
It cost $135 roughly to register the new one for 12 months (paid for by dealer)
and I put 6 months on the old one ( $85) Got $120 back from QLD
Would make sense to register it in VIC and then do what I did.
Saves the inspection cost of $85 and getting measured.
Also will get a refund from VIC of balance of paid fees
See the prev thread on here about these sort of problems
Cheers

On reading the Govt documentation again maybe the 12 month thing will get you but cant you take it home registered and wait till its due in 12 months and then do it.
I see cars in QLD with interstate plates that have been there for years.
