Hi Guys,

I've looked at a couple of awnings for the 80 series, however I'd like one that folds out over the rear of the vehicle. (keep the sun off the fridge) Has anyone come up with a design to hang an 8 x 8 tarp off the rear of a vehicle.

My initial thoughts are to mount a piece of box section steel to the leading edge of the rhino rack and have another two pieces hinged to this which can be folded out to give an extra 600 on each side. I don't mind folding a tarp up but I would like to get away with only putting up a couple of poles.

I imagine I would need some strong hinges.

Regards
Geoff

Jethro,

Not exactly what you are talking about, but maybe an idea. We hang a tent (or awning/tarp) on the back of our Troopy, mounted on a frame which SLIDES into the custom made roof rack. There's a photo of the frame on our membership page. (Don't know if this will work, but try clicking here )

This frame is vehicle width, about 5 ft, and extends out about 6 ft. The outer corners are supported on tent poles carried in the rack cross members.

A slide out system may be easier than a hinged one, though it won't provide the full size you're after.

Geoff,

There are two products I know of.

The first is the Oztent Foxwing, which comes in either passenger side, or drivers side and extends out the back area of the vehicle.

Oztent Foxwing

If this is overkill, Black Widow produce awnings for either the side, or rear of a vehicle.

There is another product called 'Freds Arm' that allows an awning to be used either on the side or rear of the vehicle.

Might be off track here Jethro. Maybe you could attach your tarp to a 25 x 25 shs that is the width of your rack & have slide in extensions for the overhang. You might have to weld a couple of little lugs on the 25 x 25 to attach your tarp to to avoid the tec screws fouling the tube. Put a tec screw in a 20 x 20 shs extension to get the length of the extension right. Connect the tarp overhang to the extensions with some shock chord with a hook on the end. You could get technical & put a bend in each extension to rake them forward to get the right pull on the tarp
Roll your adjustable tent poles up in the tarp & tie it on to your with 2 bungee chords. Won't move or chafe that way. Ours was similar to this & ran along the car & just did 12,000 km without chafing. Only weighed probably 2kg plus tent poles.
If you wanted to, you could probably get away without using the extensions & you could just let the excess tarp hang down if there was no wind.
Total cost for this baby, if you use a cheap tarp, would probably be under $60.

I highly recommend the foxwing awning . only takes a minute to set up. You have to have somewhere to store the poles . Type in foxwing on u tube and there are good videos . They are $1000 but for the ease of setting up and the huge area it covers i havnt seen any better .
