We need to purchase a set top box for our van for our round Australia trip. I believe that some are better thjan others in terms of getting up a good signal. Are there any recommendations out there?

Just a thought Geofff - have you considered buying a small digital TV (preferably one capable of running from 12 volts) and replacing the present TV? Unless you want extra stuff from the set top box (recording?), then it won't be needed at all that way.
Cheers

If the old tv is analogue then keep it as it might be the only one that works in a lot of
places. Digital tv can be very frustrating. We are at Springwood just out of
Sydney and half the nights we can't get some stations...must be our position (yes proper aerial installed by pro with instruments etc). Can see them all ok on analogue. Must be difficult to get a signal out in the bush anywhere? Problem is digital is either on or not while analogue just keeps getting fuzzier.

Sorry...only till they switch the analogue off :-) then we will only have satellite that works properly. Progress is grand sometimes. Is it all a ruse to get us into satellite subscriptions?

Have to agree. Am at Walpole and cant get digital here.
Lots of other
places out of main centres dont have it either.
An LCD TV that has both like our Grundig is probably the best of both worlds.
Also be aware that quite a few outback
places have TV on vertical polarity and
so a Winegard caravan aerial wont pick it up
We have gone with
Satellite TV which is good except in parks with lots of trees.

Perth then, now it's full of bloody eastern stater's.. LOL
Anyway Post saving, we have a place in the country and there has been no word of turning digital, what are we going to have 5 WIN 5 GWN and 5 ABC's?
Perth didn't even have channel ten 20 years ago.. :-)

Hi Geoff
I am in country SA, where signal strength is a real problem for receiving
Adelaide TV. We have sold many types of set top boxes and can recommend one over the others - STRONG. Unlike most other companies here in Australia, Strong's only business here in Australia is Set Top Boxes, so they have to be good and they are. As for receiving a good signal, it will still come down to where you are and the type of antenna that you have. Do not let any salesperson tell you that you have to have a special digital antenna - this is not true.
Starting early 2010, the western parts of Victoria (
Mildura area) will be the first official area in Australia to have analogue reception turned off and digital only, followed by here in the Mid North of SA.
Cheers
Stephen

Hi, we have just been travelling in the van ( QLD& NSW) and we have a LCD tv and I just take the topset box ( Legend)from home , most
places have some digital stations , just run the box scan and see what you get , we only found one place
Sawtell van
park and sorry also
Cobar only had analogue Tv , so just did a scan on the TV ,
This year I took the HDD tuner recorder only a basic brand ( Digi Crystal) and that was OK as
well,
They work Ok on analogue TV's just as
well.

Sorry just forgot to mention we only use the white "T" plastic std van antenna and didn't have any problems with reception , Mate paid $160.00 for a special antenna, but didn't seem to be any different. "D"

we also have the simple plastic T arial and it has provided excellent digital and analogue reception all over Oz. So simple to point them in the right direction for horizontal or verticle as needed. We have an Aldi standard definition set top box and it has been great over the three years we have used it. Will buy their high definition box next time it is available on special, about $80 I believe , to get all extra channels becoming available.

We've got an AWA LCD TV (Big W Brand) and the simple Happy Wanderer antenna. Also the Aldi SD box ($29.00) and HD box ($80.00) Spent the Winter in NQ (Groper Ck.) and got excellent reception with the SD box.. We have a pop top van, and the antenna is designed to mount on the roof clamps, so you really get the option of 4 areas on the van to mount it. Cheers.

We use a Topfield SD box with an old 14 inch CRT TV. It works just great in most spots. You will always have some poor reception areas. The latest Dick Smith catalogue has a neat flat screen set with inbuilt tuner AND DVD player that caught my eye. I think it was around $350.00 If you can't get good reception watch a DVD! Some van parks have them for hire or you can start a collection from Kmart etc at around $9.00 each for older movies. Oh, and don't forget to take the instruction manual. You have to restore factory settings and search for new stations at each stop otherwise you finish up with a set full of empty channels.

Much easier to spend $500 and get a satellite setup
Mostly only takes 5 min to get going and you can watch perfect picture practically anywhere.
Only problem is b****y caravan parks with trees everywhere LOL
Cheers

You don't need to spend that much. For as little as $299.00 you can get a complete setup + delivery. At this stage and until the analogue system is switched off, digital signal strength is very poor or non existant in many areas. Once the 'roll-out' is complete and the necessary towers/repeaters etc are installed, there should be marked improvements particularly in country areas.
Satellite TV is already digital although there are limited channel choice with restricted access (for most).

Yes you can but you get what you pay for and thats why I paid more.
Included in
mine is an Auroroa card which is $99, a Box with recording capability
and a quality dish which is a lot more robust that the one I saw in a $299 set
The guy did up the bolts and the dish distorted.
No restrictions on
mine
Cheers
